San Juan Chamula is one of this places in the world that everyone
wants to see. I am one of everyone. The village inhabit Tzotzil, an
independent group of ancestor of Maya tradition. This land does not
belong to Mexico, it belongs to indigenous living there. The most
intriguing place in the San Juan is the church.
It is strictly forbidden to take photos here, if you take one you
will be violently punished.
At least this information you will find on a ticket. I did not
try.
There is a church, there are no seats. The straw is all over the
floor, there are thousands of candles, people are sitting on the
floor praying in Tzetzal and Tzotzil languages, sacrificing chicken
(you can hear chicken dying in the church) a Coke (yes Coke, who
knows why!? ) to God, praying to San Juan who is the most important,
more the Jesus. They still consider being catholic.
