First rays of sunrise suncoming through the blind had woken me up. I realized that I am in thebus. I checked my watch, it was seven in the morning. I was alreadyin Zacatecas State, soon arriving to the capital. Overnight thelandscape has changed drastically. Spacious flatlands with a few burnt-out bushes, yellow grasses and cactuses replaced green andfertile mountains of central Mexico. There were less people, lesscars, less houses, less everything. Finally. Real Mexico is out ofDF.

Sun is different thisdays. I can't use to it. For me the summertime is not over, mainlybecause of pretty high temperature, the fact that I still weart-shirt and flip-flops instead of thick wool coat and warm gloves.Rays are not that hot though, the morning and the evening ones arevery long, orange, and not that bright. The sky took on a differentcolour too, it is not so bright and blue is definitely different.Frankly, it is hard to explain. You have to come over and see that.

When I arrive to ZacatecasI knew I am in north Mexico. The vaqueros (cowboys) were all over theplace. A white-ish cowboy hat, a handmade leather boots, a pair ofjeans reveals the true. Two years ago I would bet that I am in Texas,but south of USA is mexican. Well, it used to be Mexico, butsomeone(!) trade it.

At the very begging I wasa bit lost. I took the first local bus to the centre and once it waspassing by the first historic-looking church I hop-off. Too early.Then I lost in messy grid for at least an hour looking for anyonethat could help me. Finally following the aqueduct I got to thecharming city centre.

What is worth seeing inZacatecas? First of all the the city. Weaving narrow streets andcallejones you will discover the history of a former capital ofsilver. Each corner hides a new secret, a plaza, a panoramic viewover the valley, baroque church, an artesian candy shop...

Museo Pedro Coronel was abig, very big, positive surprise. When your guide book says a modernart museum and it is in the middle of nowhere, you are not expectinga lot. I shouldn't judge so fast, I am really ashamed. The museum hasa breathtaking collection of drawing starting from Braque, Picasso,Ernst through Dali, Chagal, Miro to Orozco and Rivera. Mindblowing... Besides they have a small collection of ancient art formall over the world. It would nothing special, but they exibit thepieces from Indonesia, Angola and Mexico next to each other toemphasize the similarities. <3

If possible, I andprobably everyone, wants to see the city form above. To admire thegenius of the one who designed, of the one who redesigned it(community), the simple beauty of colourful rooftops, green parks,people passing by... You have to climb pretty steep stairs to get tothe lower station of teleferico, which will take you to the Cerro dela Buffa. There is a church, monument, viewing platform there and theview. It is windy there.

In the ex-convent ofFranciscans there is the next stunning museum.

The question: "To amuseum or for an exhibition?" was more than actual there. Theplace is know as a Mask Museum. No without a reason - it has acollection of 1en thousand masks! So you can wander around hours anddiscover ones from Veracruz, ones from Chiapas or Tabasco. Afterseeing probably two hundreds you don't wanna see more, but to leaveyou have to pass all of them.

But... before you startthe mask-education you enter in a fairytale land- the convent. Itreminds me of the history Romeo and Juliet, though is nothing likeVerona.

I can imagine Romeo in thepatio calling:

But soft! What lightthrough yonder window breaks?

It is the east, andJuliet is the sun.

Arise, fair sun, andkill the envious moon,

Who is already sick andpale with grief

Genius loci of the convent is worth to admire. You just want to sitand think. What happened there? Who was living here three hundredyears ago? Was it like that? Did they even realized how beautiful isthis place?

I hadto leave Zacatecas late afternoon. All the hostel were booked. Idecided to spent a night in a nearby pueblo magico-Jerez.

Obudziły mniepromienie porannego słońca. Byłem w autobusie, spojrzałem nazegarek. To dopiero siódma rana. Byłem już w Zacatecas, wkrótcepowinienem dojechać do stolicy stanu. Krajobraz północy znacznieróżni się od okolic Miasta Meksyk. Bezkresne równiny, spalonesłońcem karłowata drzewa, porozrzucane kaktusy, wielka otwartaprzestrzeń. Bez ludzi, bez samochodów, bez miast. Cisza i spokój.Chciałoby się powiedzieć: Witamy w Meksyku!

Ostatnio słońcejest jakieś inne. Trudno się do tego przyzwyczaić. Dla mnie latociągle trwa. Wieczny sierpień. Promienie słoneczne nie są jużtak gorące, ale potrafią poparzyć skórę. Mają ciepłypomarańczowy kolor i nie są tak jasne. Drzewa, domy, ludzie rzucają długie, wyraźne cienie. Niebo mimo, że niebieskie ibezchmurne, też jest jakieś inne. Nasze zimowe niebo w słonecznedni przyjmuje intensywny, głęboki szafirowy kolor, to jest dużojaśniejsze, jakby nie starczyło farby.

Kiedy dojechałemna dworzec zacateński wiedziałem, że jestem na północy. PołudnieStanów Zjednoczonych i Meksyku muszą być do siebie podobne,przecież w końcu do niedawna były jednym państwem. To krainakowbojów. Prawdziwy vaquero ma długie, skórzane butynajlepiej brązowe z długim szpicem i na dość wysokim obcasie,czasami ze skóry kajmana lub węży, jasny kapelusz z wełny lubwłosia króliczego, skórzany pasek, niebieskie jeansy Wranglera (!)i jasną koszulę.

Uwielbiam krążyći gubić się w gęstwinie małych uliczek, iść przed siebie ibłądzić, napotykając na barokowy kościół, niewielki plac zdrzewami pomarańczy, mała czekoladziarnię gdzie mogęwreszcie zobaczyć jak się się ją wytwarza i jak smakują owocekakaowca, taras z którego rozciąga się widok na miasto. To czeka wZacatecas.

Gdy się jużznalazłem i pogodziłem z moją mapą poszedłem do Museum PedroCoronel. Sceptycznie podchodzę do muzeów sztuki nowoczesnej gdzieśna prowincji, daleko od tego gdzie wszytko się dzieję. Biję się wpierś i jest mi wyjątkowo wstyd, że tak właśnie pomyślałem itu. Kolekcja rysunków jest imponująca jest Braque, Picasso, Ernst,Miro, Chagal, Dali, Arp, Orozco, Riviera i więcej... Możnazapomnieć o bożym świecie.

W tym roku chybanie pojadę kolejką na Kasprowy Wierch. Zastąpić to, prawie, możeteleferico na Cerr de la Buffa. Żeby dostać się na góręnajpierw trzeba pokonać chyba z tysiąc stromych schodów, któreprowadzą na stację dolną, żeby tam wsiąść do wagonika.Maszynista-przewodnik opowiada historię miasta i miejscowe legendy,pokazuje wszytko co należy zobaczyć.

Na górze jestkościół, w którym para młoda szykuje się do ślubu, punktwidokowy i mauzoleum.

To co najlepsze zostawiłem sobie nakoniec- Muzeum Masek. Jak dla mnie dziesięć tysięcy (!) masek niejest powodem, żeby tam przyjść. Samo miejsce jest jak z z dramatówSzekspira. Stare popękane mury, kamienne łuki, rozwarte kopuły,zielone ogrody z kwitnącymi magnoliami i forsycjami, balkon, taki naktórym czekała Julia, płożące się drzewa oliwne, cyprysy... ipomyśleć, że był to kiedyś klasztor franciszkański

Wyjechałem z miasta tuż przedwieczorem, wszystki miejsca w hotelach zajęte, niebawem miałemdojechać do Jerez.

Morelia

I cannot imagine that I forgot Morelia.I was checking out my photo archives and I realized that I have beenthere two years ago. It doesn't happen to me very often. Well it doeswith movies and books but never with places. Sclerosis.

Why I didn't enjoy it then? (that mustbe a reason why I forgot about it) It is like a perfectly cut Italiansuit and I use a Italian adjective no without reason. Ifyou show the picture of the downtown to a random person I bet hewould say that this is south of Italy.

Frankly, I amalways wondering why many of Latin American cities looks like Italynot Spain.

I went there forThe Morelia International Film Festival. It was a bit disappointingexperience. Whenever you go for such an event you expect a hundredthsof cinema-lovers, movies being shown in an old theaters, warehouses,backyards, squares...but not in the multiplex. That totally spoilsthe atmosphere! (I know that it is maybe cheaper and easier fromlogistic point of view, but c'mon...). The movie selection was OK,but once again not great. The Hollywood blockbusters and movie starsare omnipresent...Fucking globalism.

Morelia haseverything that a city needs: nice main square, surrounded byarchways, with comfy benches and casting shadow, all-year greentrees, magnificent cathedral and interesting, walkable downtown.

After visitingMorelia I am more and more fascinated with colonial house. In acouple of last months I have seen dozens from the Spanish times up tothe one form twenties and thirties of the last century, but I havenever seen a modern or contemporary interpretation. ProbablyGuatemala and Nicaragua are too poor but Mexico, DF for sure not. Thefirst one I have seen is a very good example how to use the idea in amodernist-ish way. In the seat of foundation of Kurimazutto Kalachused simple forms, local materials, traditional scheme andconstructive solution. My favorite part is he backyard with a thick,green garden...

Getting back toMorelia. Mexican food is well know for tacos, burritos (!),tortillas, frijoles but a local specialty is gazpacho. You can forgetabout the one you have tried in Spain.

You chop finelypineapple, mango and jicama add some freshly squeezed orange juiceand mix it, put some picante and sprinkle the soup thing with freshcottage type cheese. Yami!

Ciągle wMichoacan. Wreszcie w Moreli.

Morelia to dla mnie najbardziej włoskie z meksykańskich miast; place, ulice,pałace, kościoły sprawiają wrażenie, że jesteśmy gdzieś wPugli, Calabri czy na Sycyli i to palące słońce.

Ostatnio zastanawiamnie czemu właściwie miasta ameryki łacińskiej są bardziej"italiańskie" niż hiszpańskie. Ciągle nie wiem.

Pojechałem przedewszytkim na Festiwal Filmowy w Moreli. I tu spotakło mnie wielkierozczarowanie. Jak myślę festiwal filmowy to widzę stare kina,małe kafjeki, rynek Kazimierza, namioty gdzie puszczają filmy,kinomanów, aktorów. A tu heca. Wszystko było w multipleksie! Możei selekcja filmów była niezła, ale niestety Hollywood i tu siębezczelnie panoszy. Wygranym dla mnie i dla jury był film Fechade Canducidad czyli Data Ważnośći czego zapewne nieobejrzycia w kinach w Polsce, niestety.

A i gazpacho. U nasi wszędzie znane to hiszpańskie z pomidorów, a tu niespodziankagazpacho owocowe.Kroiszmango, ananasa i jicamę (sprawdziałem jicama to po polsku Kłębiankątowaty -pięknie!) wdorbną kosteczkę, wyciskasz sok z dojrzałych pomarańczy,dodajesz chili i mieszasz, podajesz z twarożkiem wiejskim. Pychota!

Patzcuaro

Michoacan abounds inwonders. This time the trip was about goingfor a Film Festival in Morelia, but we (this time I was travelingwith local folks) decided to go first to Patzcuaro,next pueblo magico.

The town and the lakeregion (Lago de Patzcuaro) is well-knownfor colorful, magical and mystic it's celebration of Dia de losMuertos (Day of the Dead). When thousands of locals and bystandersare coming to see a still vivid tradition. I wish to be one ofthem-next year?

The way from Mexico Cityleads through the quiet mountains andvalleys, once you leave the urbanized area you finally feel that youare in North America. Four lanes highway meandering thorug virginlandscape, huge open spaces, wetlands and lakes, forest...this isprobably what I miss the most the nature. In Europe, at least in thepart where I am from, the wildness is at arm's length. Here (from DFpoint of view) it is so far away.

Patzcuaro is one of theplaces in the world that has this thing.Today probably we would say X Factor:) It seems like I am repeating myself saying that this is abeautiful colonial town, but what should I say if it is a true. Thereare two garden type squares (Plaza Grandeand Plaza Chica) surrounded by colonial or historical buildingsand of course a nice church and a market as a standard set of latin city.

One of the sights youshould see hereis Casa de los Once Patios. I would say this is a supreme achievementof colonial residential architecture. Eleven patios.Each one has a different atmosphere,structure and purpose. The gorgeous semi-open entrance patio has asmall fountain, the one in the east corner a spectacular view on thecity, other is a garden. It is a shame the not all of them are openfor a public view. I was wondering only whythere was no restaurant there, people, especially couples loves thisvibe.

The other wort-seeingplace is, obviously, a church -Templo de la Comañia, with a wooden(!) mosaic parquet...Hopefully soon they will open the AntiguoHospital de Santa Marta.

Michoacan to stanpołożony nie więcej niż trzy godziny jazdy samochodem od stolicy.Tym razem wybrałem (ba, wybraliśmy się z miejscową ekipą) abyzobaczyć Festiwal Filmowy w Morelii, ale zanim tam dotarliśmy nachwilę zatrzymaliśmy się w Patzcuaro.

Miasteczko i jezioronad którym prawie leży a nazywa się tak samo znane są wszech iwobec z kolorowego Święta Zmarłych (Dia de los Muertos). Podobniejak u nas rodziny spotykają się aby spotkać się z bliskimi natamtym świecie. I na tym podobieństwa się kończą, tu jest tojedno z najweselszych świąt. Meksykanie jedzą i piją nacmentarzu, na parę dnie przed ustawiają ofiary dla zmarłychWygląda to mniej więcej jak ołtarz, na którym ustawia się ofiarędla nieboszczka z rzeczy, które lubił, więc oprócz jedzeniaczęsto pojawia się alkohol czy ulubione przedmioty. Kiedyś napiszęwięcej o tym szczególnym święcie.

Droga ze stolicywiedzie przez góry i doliny, wielkie otwarte przestrzenie,przepaści, jeziora i wszystko co można sobie wymarzyć. Jak tylkouda się wyjechać z Miasta Meksyk, poza zabudowania, przyrodapokazuje się w całej swojej krasie. To chyba jest coś czego bardzomi tutaj brakuje, dzikiej przyrody, dostępnej na wyciągnięcieręki.

Patzcuaro to jedno z tychmiejsc. Ma ono w sobie to Coś, co trudno jest określić i za to Cośje lubię.

Chyba powoli robię się monotematyczny w tymmoim zachwycie nad wszystkim, pisząc jakie coś jest wspaniałe,piękne, cudowny, oszałamiające etc. Ale cóż mam pisać jak takjest i będe clichè

Mógłbym właściwe kiedyś wspomnieć ogangach w Sonorze, kartelach narkotykowych czy jak spadł śmigłowiecz Ministrem Spraw Wewnętrznych (tutaj to tzw, numer dwa w państwie),ale po co, chyba jedynie po to żeby moi rodzice osiwieli i każdybał się odwiedzić Meksyk. Lepiej będę pisał o motylkach(niebawem jadę zobaczyć Monarcha Mariposa).

W Patzcuaro są dwa place, jeden nazywa sięduży (Plaza Grande) a drugi mały (Placa Chica) i oba otoczone sąbądź to kolonialnymi bądź to historycznymi budynkami, po środkustoją fontanny a dokoła snuja się miejscowi i kilku zagubionychturystów. Generalnie cud, miód i orzeszki aż nie chcę sięwyjeżdżać.

Co warto zobaczyć w Patzcuaro? Z całąpewnością Dom Jedenastu Dziedzińców. Jak dla mnie szczytoweosiągnięcie architektury kolonialnej. Każde patio jest inne,wejściowe na wpółotwarte otoczone kolumnadą, z tego po wschodniejstronie można obserwować dachy miasta a jeszcze inne to niewielkiogród. Aż chciałoby się tam zamieszkać.

Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa

Doyou remember Bahia de Huatulco? What have Mexican government donewith spotless, virgin and beautiful bays and beaches? Are there moreexamples? Yes.

Inthe Guerrero State (the one with Acapulco) there was a small fishingtown called Zinhuatanejo. Next to it in the seventies they decided tobuild a new, world-class, modern resort onwhat was once a coconut plantation and mangrove estuary.(Sustainability was probably unknown these days, well not only thesedays). Theproject was organized in super-blocks with irregular shapes, with thehigh-speed streets separating these blocks.That's why I went to the town of Zihuatanejo, hoping to find sometranquil time and Puerto Escondido-like atmosphere. That was a miss.Zihuatanejo is a perfect place if you are a Mexican mum taking yourfamily for a weekend by the Ocean, not exactly if you are abackpacker. Though I met few lost.

Iwill not forget one moment. It was Saturday night, I was walking downthe beach, just by the Zocalo, I saw people standing and staring inan unexpected direction. When I came closer I realized why. Therewas a massive beauty-sea turtle. She was just slowly, crawling on thesandy beach. I could stare and stare admiring. But she stopped andstarted digging a whole. It was a nesting season. She definitely cameto the wrong place, full of inquisitivepeople.Some idiots started taking photos! Fortunately there was a fishermanpassing by and he stopped the people, told us to back off at leastfifteen meters to leave her alone and called the PortAuthorities.Uf.

Czypamiętacie wpis o Zatokach Huatluco? Tam gdzie kiedyś były piękne,dziewicze plaże a Almodovar kręcił filmy? Co znów zmalował rządmeksykański? Czy jest więcej takich przypadków? Jasne.

Napółnoc od Acapulco (nota bene), nad Pacyfikiem, leżało małemiasteczko zwane Zihuatanejo, tuż obok niego cudownej natury zatoka.Tam też w latach siedemdziesiątych postanowiono wybudować"światowej klasy kurort". Na miejsce plantacji palmkokosowych i lasu namorzynowego* zbudowano betonowe arterie, wielkieszare hotele z basenami i plastikowymi krzesłami. Dlatego właśniepojechałem do Zihuatanejo, gdzie spodziewałem się spokojnejatmosfery jak w Playa Madera w Nikaragui. Grubo się przeliczyłem.To raczej miejsce gdzie przyjeżdżają liczne lub bardzo licznerodziny meksykańskie, żeby odpocząć(?). A hostel był tuż oboktargu. Na szczęście spotkałem kilku zbłądzonych jak jabackpakerów** i czas minął przyjemnie, nawet udało mi sięzanurkować, po raz pierwszy po tej stronie kontynentu.

Jednejrzeczy z tej wycieczki nie zapomnę. Była sobota wieczór, wracałemdo hostelu wzdłuż plaży, w oddali spostrzegłem grupę ludzitrzaskającą foty jak opętani, cóż pomyślałem, kolejna rodzinameksykańska. Ale moja ciekawość, która mnie kiedyś do piekłazaprowadzi, była większa. Gdy tam doszedłem zobaczyłem, że kilkametrów od nich człapie żółw. Wielki, żółw morski. Ach. Stałemw oddali obserwując, gdy ona zatrzymała się i zaczęła kopaćdziurę. Chciała tu złożyć jaja. Z pewnością nie było tonajlepsze miejsce. Znaczy nie powinno tam być ludzi ani miasta, anie żółwicy.

Naszczęście plażą przechodził również rybak z pobliskiego portu,który doprowadził do porządku całe tałatajstwo, kazał nam sięodsunąć na kilkanaście metrów, opieprzył tych co strzelają fotyi zadzwonił do pracowników portu. Brawo dla niego, a dla mniewstyd.

Tepotzotlán

Don'tmistake it with Tepoztlán.

Whilegoing there I was hoping to get to the place I want, there was no busto Tepotzotlán but there was one to Tepozotlán. Why they changedthe name of the town? Answer should be: Why not?

Tepotzotlánis the next pueblo magicoIhave visted. In Nahuatl means "among humpbacks" and as far I know refers to the shape ofthe hills surrounding the village...

Thehistorical centre is in a specific way charming, the colonial streetspreserved its unique character. Though it is nothing like Tepoztlanor San Angel.

Youcome there to visit the Jesuit Ex Convento and basically that ispretty much all.

Themonastery has a nice garden where for the first time in months Ihave seen well kept lawn, well lawn.

Localsare very proud of a gold dripping altar.

Andit stops here for most of the people. But I am an urbanist too, notonly a backpacker. Getting there means hacking through the sprawl ofMexico City. Once you cross the first multilevel crossroad you seethat the houses are poorer and poorer, road shoulders are more andmore dirty, there are more and more electricity cables hanging formposts... It was about an hour ride from the "bus station"Rosario butI had a feeling I had never left the city, it was justless dense and lower.

WhyI am writing it now? The Convent has a terrace and once you get thereyou see sprawl. It approaches the colonial village, which mostprobably in 2-4 years will become a part of The Greater(?) MexicoCity.

Niepomylcie z Tepoztlán.

Jadącna miejsce w duchu modliłem się abym dojechał tam gdzie chcę. Niebez przyczyny piszę na początku, żeby nie mylić z Tepoztlan. Otóżwsiadłem do czegoś na kształt minibusu jadącego do Tepozotlan ido końca nie wiedziałem czy dojadę tam gdzie chcę:)

Tepotzotlán to kolejna z magicznychosad, którąudało mi się odwiedzić. W języku Nahuatl znaczy otoczona garbami,co nawiązuje do kształtów okolicznych wzgórz i pagórków.

Zabytkowaczęść miasta (założonego nota bene w XVI wieku) ma w sobie cośinteresującego, nie ma jednak tej magii jaką znajdziemy wewcześniej wspomnianym Tepoztlanie czy San Angel.

Turyściprzyjeżdżają tam aby zobaczyć były klasztor jezuitów, w którymdziś znajduję się muzeum. Najważniejszym elementem wycieczki ponim jest całkiem przyzwoity kościół z bardzo, bardzo bogatymołtarzem oraz akwedukt, który niegdyś doprowadzał wodę do całegozałożenia.

Takwłaściwie mógłbym już skończyć tutaj, ale sama droga skłoniłamnie do refleksji. Peserowyrusza z czegoś co można by nazwać dworcem ( klasy np. właśniezamkniętej PKS Łódź Centralna, ale jak na standardy meksykańskieto nie przystoi) i dociera do celu po ponad godzinie. Tak naprawdęnigdy nie wyjeżdżamy z miasta, cały czas przedzieramy się przezdalsze wsie i miasteczka połączone z DF. Jedno co bije po oczach toczym dalej od centrum to biednej i brudniej, domy są niższe a nasłupach wisi coraz więcej kabli.

Dlaczegoo tym wspominam teraz? Jak każde przyzwoite miasteczko i to ma swojąpunkt widokowy, w tym przypadku taras klasztorny. Widać stamtąddoskonale jak zbliża się Miasto. Założę się, że za 2-4 latawchłonie ono i Tepotzotlán. Szkoda.

Cuernavaca (in NahuatlCuauhnāhuac "near the woods") in the twenties of XXcentury used to be a glamorous retreat attracting personalities fromall around the world such as Rita Hayworth, Al Capone and later in60' European and Middle East royalty like Shah of Iran...
What is the main attractor? Is it weather (Von Humboltcalled it city of eternal spring- theaverage temperature is 21 C), stunning location or beautifularchitecture- massive colonial houses with tropical gardens. Myguide was warning me that the real beauty is hidden behind high wallsof sprawling colonial villas.
Here you have to imagine that you cross to the other side of themirror, like Alice. Jardin Borda has this unparalleled atmosphere ofmagic, the play of shadow and light, harmonic architecture immersedin blooming flowers, tropical trees and bushes; delicate warm windblowing and rustling leaves, colourful birds singing their serenade.At the very first sight it looks little abandoned, unkept but in thischarming Italian way.
Though it does not occupy a big area, but thanks to variouslevels, terraces, ponds, fountains it seems to be really spacious. Ihad a feeling I am in a kind of maze, but this particular one you donot want to leave. I was loosing myself for a couple of hours, coupleof great hours.
I was already sold on.
But this is not the end of story. In Cuarnavaca used to "live"a man who could be my idol. Robert Brady. He spent his livetravelling and assembling his magnificent collection. Rich mosaic ofpieces of arts and crafts from all around the world. Starting fromfine art such as paintings by Frida Kahlo or Rufino Tamayo to ancientobjects form Africa, Oceania, India and Far East!
Casa de la Torres, where he deicide to locate his collection, hasan undeniable charm. Just few blocks outside of the down town, in aportion of a massive XVI century (!) ex-convent seems to be verymessy. The objects are flooding the place. Mask, paintingssculptures, lamps, furniture is literally cramped.
This house is a perfect definition horror vacui.

Before living Cuerna I decided to visit the Cathedral (churchesand temples are the places I always visit. The used to be (and someof then still are) the most important place in every town so theyrepresent the greatest quality and achievement of localarchitecture).
The Cathedral passed a lifting couple ofyears ago. From falling into a ruin church it has change to stunningexample of remodelling. By contrasting simple forms with ornamentedinterior, recalling golden coated molding and restoring the colourfulstained glass architects (who did it?) achieve an impressiveatmosphere.
Now I am only wondering what I have missed. What is hidden behindhigh and inaccessible walls? I hoper that the next time I am gonnasee it.

Curnavaca ( w języku Nahuatl Cuauhnāhuac znaczyw otoczeniu lasu, drzew) w latach dwudziestych ubiegłegostulecia była Tym kurortem, który przyciągał do siebie największeosobowości kina i życia publicznego, takie jak Rita Hayworth czy AlCapone. Kilkadziesiąt lat później stała się ulubionym miejscemwypoczynku rodzin królewskich z Europy i krajów Bliskiego Wschodu.

Co tak naprawdę jest magnesem przyciągającym dotego miasta? Czy może jest to pogoda? Chyba nikt z nas nie skarżyłbysię na średnią roczną temperaturę wynoszącą dwadzieścia jedenstopni Celsjusza i bardzo, bardzo niewiele deszczowych dni. Nie bezkozery nasz sąsiad zza miedzy, niejaki von Humboldt, nazwał jąkrainą wiecznej wiosny. A może niezwykłe położenie pośródgór? Albo piękne kolonialne domy z ogromnymi, zawsze zielonymiogrodami?

A teraz musimy sobie wyobrazić, że tak jak bajkowaAlicja przechodzimy na drugą stronę lustra. W Cuernavaca'e tafląlustra jest brama wejściowa do Ogrodów Borda (Jardin Borda). Mająone jakąś niepowtarzalną magię unoszącą się w powietrzu.Harmonijna architektura ukryta wśród bujnej i bogatej zieleni niedaje odpocząć oku ani na chwilę, nad głowami śpiewają ptaki ilatają kolorowe motyle. Może to brzmi nieco (?) kiczowato, ale taknaprawdę jest. Straciłem rachubę czasu i dałem się zgubić wogrodzie, który śmiało mógłbym nazwać Ogrodem RozkoszyZiemskich.

Zakochany w mieście chciałem więcej. Okazało się,że nie po takich doświadczeniach czekają mnie kolejne. Otóż * wmieście Cuernavaca żył, a raczej miał swój dom (?) pan RobertBrady, podróżnik. Większość swojego życia spędził zbierającprzedmioty do swojej niezwykłej kolekcji dzieł sztuki i rękodzieła.W Casa de las Torres, gdzie postanowił wystawiać swoją kolekcjęobok obrazów Fridy Kahlo i Rufino Tamayo znajdziemy sztukę ludowąz Azji, Ameryki Południowej, Afryki! Wnętrze wyglądają jakbyjednak nasz bohater cierpiał na znane nam schorzenie horrorvacui**

Sam dom budzi zachwyt,ukryty w cieniu katedry, założony w byłym klasztorze Franciszkanówotwiera się na ogród a z tarasów można obserwować całe miasto idolinę!

Zanim opuściłemCuernavaca'ę na dobre zajrzałem jeszcze do katedry. I tu znówpozytywne zaskoczenie, moi koledzy po fachu parę lat temuodrestaurowali ją w sposób godny pochwały. Do dość bogategownętrza wprowadzili proste formy i duże plamy kolorystyczne. Dużezłote płaszczyzny odwołują się do nieistniejących już bogatychinkrustacji głowic kolumn głównego ołtarza. A całośćoświetlona przez wielobarwne witraże robi imponujące wrażenie.

Zastanawiam się teraz coczeka za tymi murami Cuernavaca'i? Czy więcej niespodzianek? Mamnadzieję, że będę mógł to kiedyś odkryć.

Onehour ride from Mexico City lies a beautiful and charming town called Tepoztlán, a weekend destination for chilangos. One of the 40Magical Villages*. Epithets such as magical, stunning, vibrant, orone of the best (typical for LP) always sounds for me suspicious.Going there I did not expect anything like that, I just wanted torest from noisy city, breath a fresh (or maybe just not polluted)air.

Tepoztlánin nahuatl language (one of pre-hispanic languages ) means a placerich with copper. According to lthe ocal tradition place of a birthof Quetzalcoatla -feathered-serpent god.

Thecolonial town was founded in the valley on the contrary to Mayanswhich is high in the mountains, almost on the peak of Ehecatepetl.Today you can reach it climbing comfy stairs, so entire families run(literally) to see an outstanding view over the valley, a town andsurrounding mountains.

Onthe top, apart form the temple and crowd of tourist, I met araccoons, looked like a big Mexican family of raccoons, who robbedeveryone backpack of all delicious sandwiches and sweets.

Inthe valley lies a bit sleepy and artistic colonial town. Undoubtedlya jewel in the crown is a renaissance Dominican ex-monastery whereyou can climb up and see the pyramid and nice view over the town andthe valley and wander around feeling the history of the place, ofSpaniards and indigenous.

Tepoztlánis also famous for Tepoztnieves, ice-creams/gelatti of the hundredsof flavours something like Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans fromHarry Potter. I recommend Beso de Angel.

Ireally reccomend this Pueblo Magico.

Napołudnie od Mexico City leży urocza miejscowość Tepoztlán, celweekendowych wypadów mieszczuchów. To jedna z czterdziestumagicznych osad * w Meksyku. Epitety magiczna, niezapomniana, rajskazawsze wydają mi się dość pretensjonalne, więc i tym razem jadącnie spodziewałem się żadnego łał.Chciałem jedynie odpocząć od zgiełku miasta, powdychać świeżepowietrze. Mission accomplished jak mówią Amerykanie.

Nadole czeka na nas kolonialne niewielkie miasteczko z godnym uwagibyłym klasztorem dominikanów ukryty mza wysokimi murami.Wklasztorze wszyscy idą na wsparty renesansową kolumnadą taras, zktórego można obserwować i piramidę, i niegdyś piękną górskądolinę.
Tepoztlánznany jest również ze Tepoztnieves, czyli lodów, które tu możnaspróbować chyba we wszystkich znanych i nieznanych smakach, odklasyków takich jak mango z chili do bardziej niecodziennych jakcebula czy nopal**, ja polecam Beso de Angel.

I promised months ago that I will be reporting from Mexico City. I always keep my word.

Mexico City, by locals* and Mexicans, called just DF is the biggest** city in the world! Hell Yeah!
The current motto of the city says Capital en movimiento (I believe I don't have to translate it) but honestly I prefer the former one: Llena de vida (Bursting with life) which describes the city perfectly.
The crowded streets, overloaded tube (and it is overloaded as anywhere else, there is an endless and a continuous stream of people), food lying in wait for you on the closest corner (tacos al pastor, quesadillas de flor, tlacoyo, agua de jamaica, tortas, enchiladas, pozole, ricos-deliciosos tamales oaxaqueños), where every street has its keepers which will take care of it and your car, former capital of Aztec Empire (Tenōchtitlān) and El Nuevo Mundo, place where indigenous tradition mixes with modern lifestyle, music and intolerable noise are omnipresent (Mexicans scream selling gas tanks in the very morning, play broken hurdy gurdy, put very(!) loud music in every single shop including pharmacy-por favor and in the tube selling 160 temas de mùsica romàntica and you can go for a free violin concert in the 16th century ex-monastery), amazing weather, positive and very open people, world-class museum, air pollution exceeding any norms, where ahorita (now) means in 2-3 hours or sometimes never and Pacific is just next door.

Już dawno obiecałem sobie i wszystkim, że będę pisać z Meksyku, niniejszym dotrzymuje albo zaczynam dotrzymywać danego słowa.

Miasto Meksyk, Mexico City, przez tubylców* i Meksykaninów, zwana w skrócie DF (deefe). Największe **miasto na świecie!

Motto miasta to Capital en movimiento (Stolica w ruchu) ja wolę jednak to sprzed dwóch lat Llena de vida (Pełna życia), które opisuje je znakomicie.

Zatłoczone jezdnie i chodniki, przepełnione metro (i to do granic możliwości, bardziej niż gdziekolwiek), jedzenie a właściwie puestos*** rozsiane są po całym mieście (tacos al pastor, ricos-deliciosos tamales oaxaqueños, huarche de flor, pozole, frijol i wiele wiele więcej), każda ulica ma swojego pracownika który ją pozamiata oraz popilnuje i umyje twój samochód, nawet jak tego nie chcesz, dawna stolica Imperium Azteków i Nowego Świata, miejsce gdzie muzyka i hałas są wszechobecne (pamiętacie panów krzyczących noże, noże ostrze noże w taki sposób sprzedają rano butle z gazem, wodę, zbierają śmieci-informując krzykiem z drugiej strony zespołu grające w parkach albo kwartet smyczkowy dajacy koncert Bacha na szesnastowiecznym dziedzińcu byłego klasztoru franciszkanów, muzyka w aptece i piekarni, w metrze pan sprzedający 160 temas de mùsica romàntica, eh), fantastyczna pogoda ( dziś było znów 26 stopni ), otwarci, uśmiechnięci ludzie, światowej klasy muzea, zanieczyszczenie powietrza przekraczające wszystkie znane normy, gdzie zaraz znaczy za 3 godziny lub na Świętego Nigdy a Pacyfik jest tuż za rogiem...

Dookoła a nie wzdłuż Ameryki Środkowej/ The Big Trip Epilogue

Dziś już sama nazwa jest niewłaściwa, zdeaktualizowała się na samym początku kiedy mnie jędza nie wpuściła na pokład. To była podróż przez Gwatemalę, Salwador (gdzie pierwotnie miałem nie wjeżdżać), do Nikaragui i tam rzeczywiście dookoła, wracając przez Honduras i jeszcze raz Gwatemalę (tym razem środkową i północną), do Belize i ostatecznie do Meksyku.
Szkoda, że to już się skończyło. Ale zaczyna się nowe. Le Roi est mort, vive le Roi!

Now the name doesn't sound that cool. I should have said, the trip. From new perspective, big will be bigger, can't wait, but I know it is not going to happen very soon.
This was a fascinating trip, meeting distinct cultures, attitudes, people, discovering, learning, enjoying and having fun. I really regret I haven't reach Panama and even Costa Rica, but I realized that I didn't have enough time (when planning I was sure 2 months should be more than enough), well I have more places to visit left. Now I am and I will be in Mexico for a bit. I will be reporting form here and around. Le Roi est mort, vive le Roi!

Cay Caulker

Z jednej wyspy popłynąłem na kolejną. Belize to dla mnie wyspy i rafa koralowa, jedynie przejechałem przez Belize City i Belmopan i zatrzymałem się na chwilę w magicznej Dangridze, ale z tego co wiem to za dużo nie straciłem.(Niech mnie ktoś poprawi jeśli się mylę.) Motto Cay Caulker to Go Slow! co można tłumaczyć jako zwolnij albo bardziej jako Stary Wyluzuj! Wiało i wiało, i wiało, nie udało mi się zanurkować i zobaczyć fantastycznej, podobno, Hol Chan, Blue Hole, Half Moon i wszystkich bajerów... Następnym razem!
Udało nam się co prawda namówić jeden dive-shop na nurkowanie...To było coś! Fale ze trzy razy wyższe niż łodka, więc zanim dotarliśmy już połowa chętnych wystawiała się za burtę oddając morzu śniadanie. Druga połowa, bardzo podekscytowana miała problem ze skokiem do tyłu przez burtę, bo fale były wysokie i czasami trzeba było skoczyć 3-4 metry w dół, tyłem. Widoczności nie było, tzn. że ledwo widzieliśmy przewodnika, zresztą nie wszyscy widzieli, i się zgubili i zaraz wypłynęli na powierzchnię. Mnie udało się podryfować trochę, zobaczyć niewiele i przede wszytkim wystraszone miny niektórych nurków. Mimo to muszę przyznać, że było to dobre doświadczenie.
Najlepszym punktem był jednak rejs z Raggamuffin.Popłynęliśmu piękną, drewnianym jachtem na nurkowanie powierzchniowe aby zobaczyć podwodne ogrody, żerowisko rekinów(!). Wszystko w świetnym towarzystwie, w rytmach muzyki reggae zakończone piciem belizeńskiego rumu.

Hoping for more relaxed time I went from Tobacco Cay to Cay Caulker. For sure this was not so quiet, it was way bigger and the main reason that ppl are coming here is partying (which I didn't know until I hop on the boat going there) and few of them diving and snorkelling. So it was the partiest and drunkest time of my trip.
The first thing (or ting as they say there) is an ubiquitous motto Go Slow! :)
The wind was blowing, blowing and blowing, sometimes hard and sometimes harder. So no one wanted to go to The Great Blue Hole or Half Moon I was very almost crying), more they didn't want to go to any local reef as well! Next time!
Well, we convinced one dive shop to go. Once we got few miles away from the shore we knew why. The waves where HUGE, they had 6-7 meters, so the ride was bumpy and many guys got proper seasickness. Back-flip wasn't easy too, cos the waves where a bit terrifying and sometimes you had to jump three meters down. Once we got under the water we realized that we won't see much, well some guys even lost the guide! It was an experience, fortunately my and my buddy where calm and enjoyed diving! The next day I had an amazing snorkelling trip on a proper yacht (!). Not only I saw turtles (which by the way I see almost every time I dive) but tens of sharks, few rays and amazing coral gardens. We end up drinking rum punch on the deck listening to reggae music...

Poludniowe Belize i cale wybrzeze zamieszkane jest nie przez potomkow Majow, ale przez Kreoli i Garufina, i to oni zmienili kraj w najbardziej zrelaksowane i wyluzowane, jakkolwiek to nazwiemy, miejsce jakie do tej pory widzialem. Drodzy Panstwo to nie Ameryka Lacinska to Karaiby, pelna geba.

W Dangriga trudno pojac, co oni mowia, choc mowia po angielsku. Usmiech na twarzy i dziesiaty zolwik z rzedu z nieznajomym wprawia w naprawde dobry nastroj. Nieznajomy z drugiego konca ulicy krzyczy: Czesc, jak siemasz bracie? Ale jak tylko podejdzie to szepcze: Mam skrety... moze chcesz kupic, dobre o tej porze dnia i dobre pozniej :) Nie wiem co w tym miasteczku mnie tak urzeklo, bo urodziwe to ono z pewnoscia nie jest, chyba ta atmosfera, pelnego i absloutnego luzu. Pewny jestem, ze baterie w zegarku na dnie plecka juz sie wyczerpaly. Ach i te rowery, wszyscy na rowerach!

Nastepnego dnia rano mialem plynac na Tabacco Cay ale, lodka nie poplynela, wiec ugrzazle(?) w knajpie kolo portu czekajac na jakiegos kapitana, ktory ma dzis rowniez plynac na wyspe. Kapitan byl, zwal sie Buck, lekko wstawiony zawiozl grupe czworga turystow na wyspe. Tam bylo troje innych turystow, dziesieciu mieszkancow, trzy psy i kot. Koniec.

Pamietam jak w dziecinstwie plynalem na swoja pierwsza wyspe Capri, we Wloszech, moja jeszcze mlodsza siostra, z rozczarowaniem zapytala gdzie sa palmy, zolty piasek i malpa. Tu.

Raj? Prawie.

South Belize and basically the entire costal part of the country is inhabited by Creol and Garifuan people, they have changed this small piece of land in the the most laid-back place I have ever been to. Welcome to the true Carabbean!The topic of this post I found at one of the stands in the town and this is the way they do speak english here, f**** hard to understand. Well, when they speak with you you might, small possibility, undertsand, but when you try to catch their chat it is just impossible, they mix it with Creol or Garifuna...

When you walk down the street you will here at least ten times : How you doin´babe ?! from the lovely, chubby, black girls and ... Whats up maaan? from the guys, but when you reply and they come closer you will almost have a joint in your pocket:) The town has this kind of vibe that makes you smile and you don´t know why...

The next I was to go to Tabbaco Cay, one of the paradise, remote island (as I was told and I was more sceptic of course) of Belize, the boat didn´t arrive and I could enjoy the town for a bit longer chatting with locals. When Capitain Buck arrived, he was a bit tippsy but we had no other solution then to go with him. I do not regret.

This is almost a paradise, on the one side Barrier Reef on the other, a nice sandy beach, almost no one on the island, apart from 6 other tourists, couple of locals, three dogs and one cat; warm turquise water, turtles and manatees swimming around, you don´t even have to walk for sunset and for sunrise ...

Just go!

El Remate, to cicha i spokojna osada polozona w pol drogi pomiedzy Tikal (najwazniejszy kompleks swiatynny Majow w kraju, o ktorym nie pisze) i Flores (dosc rozczarywujace miasteczko na wyspie, ktore na mapie wyglda znaczenie zgrabniej i czarujaco).

Zapewnia dlugie i powloczyste zachody slonca nad gladka tafla jeziora, pobudki na dlugo przed switem przez ptasie radio, konne przejazdzkiw pelnym sloncu nad lagune pelne krokodyli, dzika nature, i mam wrazenie prawdziwa, nieturystyczna Gwatemale. A Doña Tinta serwuje najlepsze gwatemalskie sniadanie a porcje mam wrazenie zaleza od wzrostu jedzacego:)

El Remate is on the way to Tikal (the Mayan temple complex in the country, that I have visted but you better ask other how they like it), if you wanna enjoy nature and Peten this is the place for you.

Time is counted, once again, only by sidelong sunsets and before-dawns with very, very active birds (it is said that in Peten they have 350 spieces of birds, let just 20 to frolic in the morning ). If you dare you can go horsback riding in the crocodiles laguna, or to the rain forest where mosquito to human ratio is 1000000 to 1, at least. This is the best Guatemala countryside I have seen, not spoiled by tourist and easy to talk with locals and... Doña Tinta who serves the best guatemalan brekfast ever:)

Semuc Champey znane jest z zespolu naturalnych basenow z gorska woda polozonych naturalnym moscie z piaskowca. Tysiace a moze miliony lat temu rzeka wydrazyla w skalach jaskinie i dzis przeplywa pod tymi basenami. Rzeska woda zacheca do plasow, skakania i nurkowania, i jest tym czego potrzebuje kazdy po prawie godzinnej wedrowce a czasami wspinaczce przez wilgotny i parny las podzwrotnikowy. Dziesiec kilometrow od Semuc Champey lezy Lanquin, z popularnymi w calym kraju grotami. Same jaskinie nie robi moze piorunjacego wrazenia, ale przed wejsciem spotkalismy grupe Majow, ktora odprawiala swoja ceremonie(foty) Dzis rzad, a moze wladze Parku Narodowego nie pozwalaja im uzywac jaskin do tradycyjnych modlitw i obrzedow, a kiedy sie tam tylko pojawia wejscia strzega dwaj uzbrojenia straznicy. Wedlug kalendarza Majow, to wtedy ma nastapic koniec swiata. W Gwatemali, szczegolnie w poludniowej czesci czy Altaverapaz, tam gdzie wiekszosc stanowi ludnosc rdzenna ma to wydarzenie kompletnie inny wydzwiek, ludzie w to szczerze wierza.
Z drugiej jednak strony rzady Meksku i Gwatemali zwietrzyly w tym niezly interes i przygotowaly program obchodow roku 2012, oczekujac milionow turystow.

Semcu Champey is known for its natural limestone bridge with fresh, mountain water. Thousands years ago river Polochnie(?) hollow caves, and now murky river passes under crystal water of the bridge. It is such a pleasure after a long hike through hot and humid rainy-forest just jump into fresh water and enjoy the rest of the day.
Just 10 km away from Semuc lies National Park of Lanquin known for its ok, just ok, caves. The trip will be worthless, I must admit, if I haven't seen Maya people officiating by the entrance. The Guatemalan authorities prohibited them to pray in the caves! I should mention year 2012, because here it means something.
If you aver hard about Mayan Calendar, the original is now in Archeological Museum in Mexico City, you must have heard that it finishes in 2012, and Maya believe that this is the end of the World. Since in Guatemala (btw. called Corazon del Mundo Maya-The Heart of Maya World) are a lot of Maya continuing their tradition it is the important date.

Podroz z Utily do Puerto Barrios byla dluga, bardzo dluga, siedem przesiadek i znow diabelsko kolysalo na katamaranie. Ale to nie Puerto Barrios bylo celem mojej podrozy. Nastepnego dnia rano tuz o swicie poplynalem lancha do Livingstone-osady garifunskiej.

Garifunczycy
inaczej Garinagu, mieszkancy Livingstone i Belize, potomkowie afrykanskich niewolnikow przywiezionych tu przez brytyjczykow w XVIII wieku. Daja oni kompletnie nowe oblicze Gwatemali, jeszcze bardziej zrelaksowane, ale tez co bardzo wazne pogodne i radosne. Z Afryki przywiezli ze soba muzyke-magiczne bebny; pyszne jedzenie-chleb kokosowy i placki bananowe.

Z Livingstone ruszylem dalej na poludnie z biegiem rzeki Dulce (na zdjeciach) z przystankami w goracych zrodlach, na ptasiej wyspie i w lagunie kwiatow. Mialem zostac gdzies tam, posiedziec dwa dni i ruszac na poludnie, ale ilosc komarow zmienila moje plany radykalnie i poplynalem dalej na poludnie przez El Estor i Teleman do Coban.
Jak juz wczesniej wspominalem czas w Ameryce Srodkowej mierzy sie inaczej. W Gwatemali odkrylem pewna zaleznosc, ktora na wlasne potrzeby nazwalem Gwatemlskim Wspolczynnikiem Czasu(GWC).
Podroz z Rio Dulce do El Estor miala trwac 20 minut, u celu bylismy po 35 minutach (20/35=0.57); z El Estor do Teleman mialo byc dwie moze dwie i pol godziny, dojechalem po trzech i pol (120/210=0.57) i ostatnia czesc miala trwac trzy i pol dojechalismy prawie w szesc godzin (210/350=0.6). Grrr!

Way from Utila to Puerto Barrios was really long, I had to change buses 5 times and there was a very bumpy boat ride. Puerto Barrios was not my destination though, it is just place, very odiouse place, form where you can take a ferry to Belize or lancha to Livingstone, Garifuna village by the Amatique Bay.
Garifuna
Called Garinagu or Black Carib, people of Livingstone and Belize, descendants of African slaves brought here by English in XVII century. Garifuna shed a new light on Guatemala, they are more relaxed and damn happy. From Africa they brought music- drums and drums, amazing cuisine-coconut bread and banana cake and easiness .
From Livingstone I took one more lancha to get to Rio Dulce. Originally I planned to stay in a finca by Rio Dulce, but in a wet season mosquito are more hungry, so I continue to Rio Dulce (town), from there to El Estor, Teleman and finally to Coban.
I already mentioned that they measure time in a different and unique way here, in Guatemala I found a special factor that describes it and I called it Guatemalan Time Factor (GTF).
Travel from Rio Dulce to El Estor should take about 20 minutes it was 35 (20/35=0.57); from El Estor to Teleman maximum 2.5 h, I arrived there after 3.5 hrs(120/210=0.57); and finally form Teleman to Coban it took almost six instead of three and a half(210/350=0.6).

I checked it the next day traveling to Semuc Champey, yeah it works!
After a very long day I got to Coban...next day I am heading to beautiful pools in Semuc Champey and mystic caves in Lanquin...

Gdzies na Morzu Karaibskim 25 mil morskich od Hondurasu na atolach koralowych leza Wyspy Bahia..wlasciwie juz nic nie powinienem dodawac...
Utila to najblizej ladu polozona wyspa otoczona cayos*. Niektore z nich juz doczekaly sie stalych mieszkancow, a niektore po dzis sa cudownie bezludne (ba, w promocji mozna sobie wynajac wyspe na dwie doby juz od niecalych 20$ za noc!).
Zeby dostac sie na Utile sa dwie drogi. Pierwsza wygodniejsza samolotem linia SOSA. Ale tu pojawia sie magiczne slowo mañana, czyli polecimy dzis jak bedzie wystarczajaco duzo chetnych, jak bedziemy mieli paliwo, jak pilot bedzie trzezwy, jak nie dzis to mañana. Drugi sposob, pewny, to Utila Princess czyli katamaran. Po wejsciu na poklad, ktorego od razu przypomina mi sie:

Dawno temu na wodach Morza Karaibskiego krolowali piraci, jednak wielu z nich po latach tulaczki postanowilo sie osiedlic, i to wlasnie od nich pochodza Kreolowie z Wysp Bahia. Wygladaja jakby wczoraj przechadzali sie gdzies w Poludniowej Walii czy Szkocji. Angielski ciagle jest tu jezykiem dominujacym, ale ma on inny smak, jest taki zrelaksowany, wolny, figlarny; Kreolowie mowia jeszcze po hiszpansku i przede wszytkim po kreolsku.
Nastepnego dnia aby uciec od zgielku (sic!) Utily prosto udalem sie na Jewel Cayo. Wysepka malutka, mieszka na niej nie wiecej niz 80 osob, ale ma siedem kosciolow (w ostatnich latach w krajach Ameryki Srodkowej na sile przybiera ruch ewangelicki) roznych odlamow chrzescijanstwa! Prad jest drogi, produkowany przez generatory na rope, a dostawy z jedzeniem przyjezdzaja raz na tydzien we wtorki, wtedy widac wszystkich uradowanych niosacych zdobycze: mango, ananasy, awokado; w srody mozna kupic swieze bulki z cynamonem, a dzien pozniej z rodzynkami... I tak zycie toczy sie powoli. Cykl dnia wyznaczaja wschody i zachody slonca, tygodnie dostawy, a lata pora deszczowa i sucha. Zegarki prosimy zostawic gleboko w plecaku.
Dni uplywaly mi na nurkowaniu, czyms co robilem wczesniej, jak sie okazlo nielegalnie, bo bez patentu nie mozna nurkowac! Co najbardziej cieszy podczas nurkowania? Rekin i zolw, wtedy to powietrze w butli szybciej sie konczy, gubi sie swojego partnera i nurkuje sie zdecydowanie za gleboko...Delfiny udalo mi sie zobaczyc jedynie na odleglosc pieciu metrow pod woda, zwialy w czeluscie jak zobaczyly chmare ciekawskich nurkow, by pochwili pojawic sie na powierzchnii, jak juz odplywalismy i odprowadzic nas przez najblizsze dziesiec, bezcennych, minut... do konca dnia z twarzy nie schodzi usmiech. Nie chcialo mi sie wyjezdzac, ale coz nowe przede mna a na nurkowanie przyjdzie pora w Belize!

Somewhere surrounded by turquoise water of Caribbean Sea on Barrier Reef are Bay Islands. Shall I add more?
Utila is the backpackers island, just 20 nautical miles from the mainland, surrounded by beautiful cays: Jewel, Diamond, Crystal... Most of them are uninhabited and you can easily rent one from 20$ per night. Fancy?
There are two ways getting to Utila. First, fast (?) and comfortable is with SOSA airlines. There is a but. The plane might leave, it depends on if there is enough people to go, if the Capitan is sober and many other unexpected factors. The other more reliable is the ferry, called Princes Utila. The catamaran is small, so it is very bumpy cruise, after which everyone seems to have a serious seasickness.
I knew that island is full of expats, but amount of leches (in Latin America they call us differently, whites, gringos, and leches which is an anagram of world leche-milk) welcoming on the island was terrifying. Welcoming, well they were trying to take us to their hotels or diving shops. After a while I realized that they are not gringos at all, they are Creole.
Creole
Years ago pirates rule the Caribbean. But after years of roaming some of they decided to settle, but for a Gods sake not on Great Britain, they stayed on Bay Islands. Today theirs descendants form Creole culture.
To runaway form golf buggies and roar of a town I took a ferry and I went to Jewel Cay. Teeny, tiny isleta just 20 minutes off the Utila, with population about 80 people. No doubt you can call this place remote, they produce electricity with diesel generators, the food supplies come once a week and this is an event. Every Tuesday just afternoon couple of small boat brings fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, rice and beans and a lot of cola. You can see happy housewives carrying sweat and ripe mangos, huge pineapples or green avocados and kids running with cold cola... Time passes here differently, no one counts hours, they have no meaning, only sunset and sunrise matter, wet and dry season... You can leave your watch deep in your backpack you will wake up with the sun and fall asleep with the first stars on sky (even if it is just nine)...
The main reason you go to Utila is diving. The diving society create here unique, in a divers world, atmosphere, more like surfers spots, with all night open bars, parties, drinks...
What makes a diver happy? For sure seeing turtle, eagle ray or ultimately shark, and bigger means better. Suddenly your gauge shows that you are low on air, you lose your buddy, and you go to deep. But you will never forget your first turtle or whale!
I could have stayed there much longer, but there is more to discover, more places to see and finally more places to dive including the place, called Blue Whole...

W bajkach pisza, ze za siedmioma gorami, za siedmioma lasami, za siodma rzeka ... tymczasem na prawdziwie basniowe polozenia ma Wyspa Ometepe, na Jeziorze Nikaragua, pomiedzy Atlantykiem a Pacyfikiem, wieki temu uformowana przez wybuch blizniaczych wulkanow Maderas i Concepcion. Dzis zamieszkana wlasciwie tylko przez indian wywodzacych sie z plemion Majow w wielu miescach zachowala dawane zwyczaje i dziewicza przyrode.
Na wyspe docierma lancha i udaja sie do ekohotelu, gdzie serwuja kuchnie Nica... czyli ryz i fasola ( arroz y frijol to chyba najpopularniejsze danie krajow Ameryki Lacinskiej), pyszne kompot (?) z marakuji, i natamales :)
Drugiego dnia pobytu na wyspie wybralismy sie nad wodospady. Mialy byc jedynie trzy kilometry marszu, jak sie okazlo tak, trzy kilometry ale od wejscia do parku, i to chyba byly najdluzsze trzy kilometry w moich zyciu. Gdy weszlismy w gesty las tu zwany dzungla, zrobilo sie nieco ciemniej i bardzo, ale to bardzo goraco. Na drzewach wisialy dojrzale mango (my w polskim mamy tylko jedno okreslenie na mango, tu jest kilka a moze kilkanascie gatunkow), soczyste awokado a na dzrewach tabliczka (w 6 jezykach)- co nie twoje nie bierz! (jedynie we francuskim napisali nie kradnij:) co by napisali po polsku jestem ciekaw) Po pol godziny drogi w oddali zaczelismy slyszec wyjce (taki duzy gatunek malp) a nad glowami pojawily sie szybko przemykajace kapucynki, od razu usmiech pojawil sie na mojej stryranej wspinaczka buzce. Wreszcie doszlismy, ukryte w waskiej doline Cascadas de San Ramon sa olsniewajace. Po dlugiej wedrowce kapiel w orzezwiajacym wodospadzie byla ogromna przyjemoscia.
W drodze powrotnej spotkal nas okrutny deszcz, dobrze ze udalo sie zlapac jakiegos dzipa, ktory laskawie (za 2 dolary, podroz za jeden usmiech na wsyspie jest niemozliwa) wzial nas na kipe i wyrzucil blisko hostelu, wrocilem totalnie mokry. Coz pora deszczowa trwa w najlepsze.

Isla de Ometepe is a sort of a place that belongs in a fairy tales or fantasy novels ( Tolkien would love it!), an island formed by twin volcanoes rising out of the Nicaragua Lake.
I got there by lancha, and then 2 hours ride to get to eco lodge...uuuu.... they are sustainable, thay work for community and they have very good chef! I tried more of Nica cuisine and must say it it really good! Passion Fruit juice and natamales are my pick!
No doubt the best you can see on the island are Cascadas de San Ramon, hidden deep in the mountains and surrounded by cloud forest. They said it is just 3 km and I must say once again that 3 km in Europe are much shorter than here. The hike was exhausting it was very hot and humid, but worth it. Jungle is beautiful, we are in mango and avocado season so trees were sugging with ripe and sweet fruits!After half hour we spot a group of capuchin and heard howler monkeys.
The waterfall is stunning. Bath in a cold water was everything I need! Clouds were covering the very top of it so it looked like water was falling from the sky.
On the way back heavy shower caught us, fortunately we catch a jeep that drove us almost to the hostel. We were soaking wet. Well we are in wet season.

San Juan del Sur & Playa Maderas

Jeszcze raz wyruszylem w poszukiwaniu najladniejszej, najpiekniejszej, najcudowniejszej, najbardziej bajkowej, najcud-miod-i-malina plazy do San Juan del Sur, i wyszlo jak zwykle. Zatoka, w ktorej lezy miasteczko, kiedys musiala zachwycac. Dzis miejscowi wzdluz plazy postawili karlowate restauracje, pastiz architektury regionalnej a wzdluz brzegu prowadzi, popularny w krajach latynowskich, betonowy, zaniedbany malecon ...
Mimo to, miasteczko jest pelne hedonistycznych turystow, i tu wiekszosc to goscie ze Stanow, ktorzy przyjechali oddac sie wszelkim przyjemnoscia i stajac sie czestokroc powodem do wstydu.
Na polnoc od San Juan lezy plaza Maderas. Jestem prawie usatysfakcjonowany. Na plazy jest hostel i bar, i gdy tylko turysci wroca do miasteczka zostaje tam dziesiec osob sam na sam z Pacifikiem. Chyba najwazniejszym wydarzeniem dnia jest zachod slonca, kiedy to wszyscy wychodza na plaze, siadaja i ogladaja niezwykly spektakl. Najpierw jak slonce powoli schodzi na dol i niebo mieni sie na pomaranczowo a potem rubinowo, po chwili szybko biegnie do horyzontu, zeby zniknac na kolejne dwanascie godzin. Po zachodzie, kiedy powoli czerwienie ochladzaja sie do fioletow, po drugiej stronie zatoki zaczyna zapadac spokojna granatowa noc. Za chwile na niebie zaczna pojawiac sie pierwsze gwiazdy.
Po prawie godzinnym przedstawieniu wszyscy ruszaja na kolacje.

Since I remember I am constantly looking for the most magical, amazing and stunning beach. Lying by the Pacific is a significant predominance. San Juan del Sur, for sure, used to have one of the beaches, with wide stripe of the sand and shallow turquoise blue water. Unfortunatelly locals destroyed it building concrete and repulsive malecon, grotesque quasi-regional bars and out scaled fisherman port... Even though, the town enjoys popularity, though most of the visitors are annoying drunk partygoers from North America looking for a very cheap fun. Sorry.
Half hour ride from San Juan, hidden in a bay and surrounded by a dramatic rocky coast lies virgin and def amazing beach called Playa Maderas. After shuttle takes all the tourist back to the town, there are only few people left.
The most important event is a sunset, everyone comes to watch it. The colors are changing smoothly starting from oranges and carmines than when sun set cooling down to magenta and ultramarine...

Just after that stars appears on the dark blue skies. Everyone goes for a dinner.

After that I am going to Isla de Omepete.

Po niewaskich dniach spedzonych w Salwatorze ruszylem na poludnie, do Nikaragui. Odleglosci w Ameryce Centralnej liczy sie nie w godzinach ale w dniach lub dobach. Nawet jesli mam do przebycia 320 km to musze na to poswiecic przynajmmniej dzien! Niestety autobusy noce nie kursuja, poza kilkoma, i tu na palcach jednej reki mozna policzyc. Po calym dniu spedzonym w autobusie docieram prawie do celu Estelì, sennej robotniczej miescowosci jakies 100 km od granicy z Hondurasem, tak jak spojrzycie na mape, zeby dostac sie z Salwatoru do Nikaragui trzeba przedsiewziac, niebezpieczna i mordercza podroz przez 2 granice, 7 gory i trzy lasy i chyba jedyny w tej czesci swiata tunel... Na miejscu dowiaduje sie pierwszej niewatpliwie frapujacej rzeczy: w Nikaragui ulice nie maja nazw... i teraz badz tu madry... Ludzie podaja kierunki wg pewnych punktow orientacyjnych, dla przyjezdnego nie jest to problem jesli punktem orientacyjnym jest kosciol z wieza, gorzej jak to jest zaklad fryzjerski gdzie wczesniej bylo przedszkole, i wszyscy mowia, ze przy przedszkolu skerc w lewo i potem jeszcze dwa kwartaly prosto i juz jestes...
Zdziwnony, wyruszam za piania koguta do celu upatrzonego dzien wczesniej. Moj przewodnik twierdzi, ze w Niakragui dwa miasta od zawsze rywalizowaly o prym, Leon i Granda, robily tez na lewo hiszpanow, budujac wieksze katedry niz byly w planach, wyzsze palace... Dzis widac dawny blask i splendor, ale przez lata zapuszczone maisto niszczeje i updada powoli... a szkoda Pierwszego wieczora, tak kolo szostej, zaczelo padac, mysle sobie pora deszczowa spoko, popada ze dwie godziny i amen. Po godzinie woda zaczela wylewac sie z ulic na chodniki ( zwazcie, ze tu chodnik jest przynajmniej 20 cm wyzej niz jezdnia) i zaczyna padac mocniej i mocniej, grzmiec i blyskac sie... w kafejce siedzialem dwie godziny, z czego godzine bez swiatla, bo wylaczyli zasilanie, w kinie dwie i pol... i ciagle pada. Do domu wracalem brodzac w strumykach plynacych chodnikami... padalo do szostej rano.. a potem jak z rana przygrzalo i znow trzydziesci piec kresek...
Nastepnego dnia czekal mnie ashboarding czyli taki snowboarding tylko, ze zamiast sniegu byl pyl wulkaniczny. Jazda! KARTKI: Obiecuje kartki. Wyslijce mi meja z adresem albo napiszcie na feju i juz leca. Zreszta czesci i tak juz wyslalem, a niektore nawet doszly!

In (Central) America they measure distance differently, saying rather 12 hours than 320 km... So after very long (hrs) but short (km) journey I didn´t reach Leon, I had to stop in a quite big town called Estelì. Once I was trying to get out of Texaco to the town center I realized sth funny & strange. In Nicaragua streets don´t have names. For locals, I believe, it doesn´t make any difference, but for everyone else does. They use characteristic points to indicate directions, let´s say two block left and one right form the corner of blue church with the post office.I didn´t even know how to ask for my hostel! ( taxi driver didn´t know the name- Lazy Turtle*!) After a BIT I got there... they told me that I should have told the taxi driver to take me to the old kindergarten...cool... The very next morning I caught a bus to Leon. The chicken bus fit a hundred sitting ppl, at least dozen standing (I was one of them) and couple more on the roof... three hours without air, sweating... once I got to Lean I was wasted... and again problem with the streets naming...at least this hostel was 2 blocks away from the main square...
It started raining about six o´clock, I though cool, maybe it will cool down air and refresh a bit. It was raining, showering, later thunderstorm started and I was stuck in Cyber for one hour without any electricity waiting for rain to stop... I was getting back rending through rapid streams running on the sidewalks... I got back to the hostel soaked and soaked. It stop raining about six in the morning, just before sunrise.
The next day I went ashborading which is basically the same as snowboarding but instead of snow there is volcanic ash. Cool!

Dotralem do Mekki surferow. Plaze Costa Balsamica nie zachecaja do plywania czy pluskania. Brzeg jest kamienisty, dno gwaltownie schodzi w dol a woda staje sie gleboka, fale sa silne i wysokie.
Zycie nad Pacyfikiem rzadzi sie innymi prawami, rytm wyznacza slonce, a czas odpoczynku i pracy ocean. Dzien zaczyna sie najczesciej od porannego surfingu, czyli tuz po wschodzie slonca, co w przypadku Salvadoru oznacza chwile po szostej rano, potem sniadanie i lagodnie kolyszacy sie hamak a w tle szum fal i wyjaca bryza... potem jeszcze jedno plywanie przed zachodem slonca i wieczorne party.
Jak uczy mnie przewodnik, jesli nie jestem surferem to ich nie zrozumiem, bo oni sa ulepieni z innej gliny i powinienem o nich raczej myslec jak o delfinach a nie o ludziach. Ktos tu przesadzil lekko.
W El Tunco poznalem rowniez kolejnego salwadorczyka, ktory na codzien mieszka w Paryzu i jest malarzem, a tu byl niesurferem a hedonista, ze sie tak wyraze. Fajnie maluje, zreszta zerknijcie. Zabral mnie z powrotem do stolicy woim mega volkswagenem.

Uhuhhuh... I am Adrian. I wanna be a surfer. Life by the Pacific is unique, time passes differently. Everything depends on sun and the ocean. Surfing is hard. You need to be in a very good shape to practice it, at least at the very beginning. Being a surfer is a lifestyle. You wake up with the sun and go surfing and then you rest, swinging in the hammock smoking or/and drinking and once again surfing just before sunset. And you are exhausted after surfing and you need this time to recover. My amazing guide told me that it is hard to understand surfers and we should treat them rathre as dolphins not people. (WTF) Costa Balsamica beaches are not made for swimming. There is alomstno sand, but pebbles,so when wave comes back stone hits your ankles...auch... water is deep and currents are strong and waves high.

San Salvador, najmniejszy kraj Ameryki Srodkowej, mial byc bardzo niebezpieczny, badz niebezpieczny. Jak tylko dojechalem, chypcikiem, czmychnalem do najblizszego hotelu, tak hotelu. Salwatorskie telenowele sa debesciackie (!), obejrzalem prawie caly odcinek siedzac w barze i czekajac na papusy, powloczuste spojrzenia, piekne rezydencje, szybkie samochody... bym sie do takiej moze przeniosl na jakis weekend...

PAPUSY

Kazdy kraj Ameryki Srodkowej ma swoje placki z kukurydzy. Salwatorskie papusy sa duzo grubsze niz tacos czy burritos i sa nadziane serem, fasola lub cukinia. Miejscowi jedza je z piklowana kapusta i marchewka. Calkiem niezle, ale ja jednak pozostaje przy quesadillas de flor de calabeza (czyli z kwiatem cukini-rarytas)

Stolica, El Salvador, zrobila na mnie dobre wrazenie. Nie mozna powiedziec, ze to jest ladne miasto, ale z pewnoscia lepsze niz inne stolice regionu. Co rzuca sie w oczy to porzadek i wzglednie czyste ulice, przynajmniej w centrum. Mozna by sie spodziewac, ze w upalnym kraju latynowskim zycie w miescie zaczyna sie po zmierzchu, nie tu. O osmej ulice sa puste a ruch samochodowy ustaje. Mieszkancy wola nie kusic losu niepotrzebnie. Jasne, ze jest otwartych kilka barow, dyskotek czy kasyn, ale strzeze je horda bramkarzy uzbrojonych po zeby. Na porzadku dziennym zobaczymy tu ochroniarzy z ostra bronia, strzega nie tylko slepow jubilerskich ale i tych z warzywami.

Pierwsza rzecza jaka mnie urzeklai rozbroilazanim jeszcze dotarlem do miasta byla to nazwa placu: Hula Hula. Moj pierwszy cel. Okazalo sie, ze to jednen z trzech glownych placy, ten najbrzydszy, zagracony budkami z ciuchami, handlarzami z pitackimi filmami, sprzedawcami niechcianym rzeczy a na dodatek brudny. Coz pozostaje mu korona za najladniejsza nazwe.
Kolo Plaza Barrios stoi zas dosc niezwykly, brutalistyczny, kosciol z genialnymi witrazami- Iglesia de Rosario. Bryla poczatkowo dziwi, ale gdy tylko wejdzie sie do srodka zachwyca spokojem, zrownowazeniem i gra swiatla, niepozorne cudenko. Rubén Martínez przekryl caly kosciol poteznym lukiem, ktory sprawia, ze kosciol jest przestrzenny i zwarty.

W Salwatorze poznalem miescowych, dzieki czemu na chilwe przestalem byc turysta z przewodnikiem, ktorych jest tu niewiele nota bene. Jednen z nich byl pol palestynczykiem... W XIX wieku do Salwatoru i Hondurasu wyemigrowalo tysiace palestynczykow. Od tego czasu stali sie wazna czescia kultury Ameryki Srodkowej, poprzedni prezdent Salwatoru byc pol-palestynczykiem. Imigranci kontroluja rowniez sporo galezi przemyslu i biznesu! Moral mieszkancy Palestyny -zydzi i filistyni sa obrotni.
Ze ze stolicy udaje sie nad Pacyfik. Do Mekki, a jakze by inaczej, surferow, La Libertad i El Tunco. Postaram sie dolaczyc do grona wspanialych:)

After couple of hours in Guatemala City, which I spend running around (literally, it was Gudatemal Coty Marthin in flip-flops) and looking for a working a cash machine I reached San Salvador. It gets dark at 6 PM there! Lonely Planet warns that the city is dangerous, very dangerous. So I just went to the next door bar where they serve papusas and some nice Salvadoran beer.

PAPUSAS

Salvador, like every Central American country has its own type of tortillas, here they call it papusas. There are thicker than tacos and always filled with cheese, frijol or meat. You eat it with pickled cabbage, onion and carrot and some hot salsa.

El Salvadord is not a beautiful city, but it has this thing that makes city likable. It has clean and tidy streets, things that I started apprecaiting just here in Central America. You may think that in a latin country streets are full of people after sunset when it is bearable to walk and stand that teenagers are hanging out and neighbours are sitting on the street chatting and drinking beer. No, not here! The city empties after six, there are no cars on the streets, people are just scared...

City has three main squares. I love one, but only for its name: Hula Hula. It used to be neat and vibrant square, now you cannoy call it like that. It is filled up with aluminium stands, kiosks where thay sell cloths and dvds, play loud music, it reminds rather market, cheap market. Unfortunately. Behind Plaza Barrios stands incredible and just beautiful church-Iglesia de Rosario designed by Rubén Martínez. This brutalist temple has calm, quiet and mystic interior created by colourful stained-glass windows. WOW.

In Salvador I met some local folks I get acquainted, thanks to that I was not a tourist for three days and I have heared a few stories about the country, why they are so many Palestinians there, how do they leave and what happened during a very recent civil war...

From San Salvador I am going to La Libertad & Costa Balsamica to try surfing in so-called the best place in Central America, maybe I will become a surfer!

Witam, witam ponownie. Ciag dalszy nastepuje nastepujaco:

Antigua (czyli stara albo ladniej antyczna, wiekowa) to miasteczko o wysokim poziomie koncetracji turystow, szczegolnie amerykanskich. Gros z nich, o wielkie nieba, przylatuje tu imprezowac, bo alkohol tu tani, imprez duzo, mozna spotkac duzo krajan i generalnie fajnie jest. Pozostawie to moze bez komentarza, jedynie ze moj hostel nazywa sie Jungle Party, ma coolerskie hamaki i przyciaga same zajebistosci w Ray Banach od ktorych moglbym sie tylko uczyc.

A teraz serio Antigua to typowe, srednio zachowane miasteczko kolonialne, zniszczone niedawnym trzesieniem Ziemi, co dalo sie we znaki wiekowym kosciolom, klasztorom i palacom. Nie powala, jak kazde miasto kolonialne ma maly park w centrum, otoczony kamieniczkami z podcieniami, fontanne na srodku i prostokatny uklad ulic ( taki jaki znamy z amerykanskich filmow np: calle 16 norte) i jest generalnie slodko. Fajnie, ze mozna sie tu czuc bezpiecznie i swobodnie, a ludzie sie symaptyczni, pomocni, goscinni i usmiechnieci.

Wulcan Pacayan mial pluc lawa w te i we w te. Ladnie to wszystko wyglada na zdjeciach sprzed roku kiedy to rzeczywiscie zarzyl sie, prazyl i bulgotal, goracej lawy nie widzialem. Powyzej 2000 m n.p.m zaczyna sie krajobraz jakby ksiezycowy (o ile oczywiscie tak wyglada Ksiezyc), czarny piasek, ostre skaly i nisko wiszace chmury, nie ma drzew. Powiem tak, bunkrow nie ma ale tez jest (prawie) zajebiscie.

A i jeszcze jedno, spotkalem pierwszych ziomkow z kraju rodzinnego, ktorzy w podrozy sa juz ponad rok, luknijcie jak macie czas. Moral na dzis i wczoraj, sprzedajemy lodowki, pralki, Isrody i inne zbedne gadzety, pakujemy plecaki i w droge. Ja tez, jutro do San Salvadroru, a potem na plaze z mysla ze zrobie swoje pierwsze kroki (slizgi?) na desce! Yuhu!

After a short ride through the stunning mountains I arrived to the most beautiful city in Guatemala.

Antigua is a small, not quiet- for sure, town, one hour ride from Guatemala City. You must have heard about this hole, there are thousands of tourists here, many of them are from USA, and many of them (sic!) came just to party. Cheap drinks, weed and girls?At least in my hostel -Jungle Party-for sure you can take a short course How to be the coolest?

The town is not amazing, it was destroyed by an earthquake couple of years ago, so all the churches are in ruins, many palaces are destroyed... The main square is OK. Just OK. I have a feeling that I will compare all the colonial cities to Guanajuato in Mexico or to Santiago de Cuba, and this might be unfair to all the other cities.

I also went hiking on the active volcano called Pacaya. In the agency they were saying that we might see lava. The guide said: you could have seen it last year when we had a massive eruption, not now. But once you get above 2000 m asl it looks fantastic. Warmish black sand and pebbles, sharp dramatic rock, no plants and this mysterious clouds ( we took it at first as a smoke).

Oh and one more important thing, you feel and are save here, finally I would say.

First week is over. Tomorrow I heading to San Salvador in El Salvador I should get my beach time there and I would definitely try surfing. Yuhu!

Tempo nieco spowolnilo, czas akcji przeszlosc, miejsce akcji Ameryka Srodkowa.

Przejscie graniczne pomiedzy Meksykiem a Gwatemala jest na rzece, w strefie przygranicznej czekaja rikszarze, zeby leniwcow przewiezc na druga strone Styksu.

W kontroli paszportowej zamiast Hola, Buenas, Passaporte uslyszalem lekko koslawe czesc. Jak sie za chilwe okazalo sie, pogranicznik, mieszkal w najwiekszym niegdys polskim miescie- Chicago, a bylo to 2o lat temu. Poznal tam wielu ziomkow i z wieloma sie zaprzyjaznil. Jak kazdy obcokrajowiec umial trzy zwroty podstawowe : czesc, jak sie masz i kurwa mac :P

Z Tecun Uman musialem pojechac do oddalonego o cztery kilometry dworca autobusowego, tym razem ja okazalem sie leniwcem i boi-o-swoje-rzeczy-i-zycie-dupa. Stamtad mialem jechac prosto do Quetzaltenango (teraz stop, przeczytaj to na glos i powtorz i zapamietaj, wraz z Chichicatenango czy Chimaltenago). Okazalo sie, ze nie ma autobusow do Xela´i ( oni tez sobie upraszczaja zycie i tak nazywaja Quetz...), jedynym sposobem zeby sie tam dostac to jazda z dwiema przesiadkami tzw. chicken busem

CHICKEN BUS ( musza sie pojawiac co jakis czas dygresje)
Gwatemalczycy sprowadzaja ze Stanow nieuzywane juz zolte autobusy, ktore w USA dowoza dzieci z przedmiesci do szkol. Tu oni je pimpumuja: najpierw przemalowywuja na przynajmniej 5 roznych kolorow, kolejno dodaja gwiazdy, blyskawice, ognie, zwierzeta i czego tylko dusza zapragnie. Do srodka pchaja dwa razy tyle siedzen ile bylo przedtem. To taka ichniejsza wersja Ryanair'a, mozna smailo powiedziec. Oprocz kierowcy, o zdolnosciach Fernando Alonzo'y, jest jeszcze jedna osoba: bileter, naganiacz, pilot, ladowacz, ktory ze zwinnoscia lemura wskakuje na dach i laduje kosze ze zwierzetami (kaczki, kury, golebie), owoce, rowery, telewizory...

Po piecio godzinnej jezdzie z przesiadkami zmeczony dotarlem do Xela´i jeszcze tylko jedno colectivo i jestem w hostelu.

Xela to drugie co do wielkosci miasto w Gwatemali, ma ponad stotysiecy mieszkancow, dziala tam dosc preznie kilkanascie szkol jezykowych, dlatego miasto wydaje sie powoli westernizowac, bardzo powoli... a i mozna spotklac sporo bialych.

GRINGOS czyli bialasy
Zawsze zatnawiam sie czy mnie widac, czy widac ze jestem turysta. Wlasnie w Xela'i zorientowalem sie jak bardzo. Jedynm rzutem oka na plac glowny mozna zobaczyc kto jest stad a kto przyjezdny. Zdradzaja nas nie tylko kolor skory, ale tez wzrost... gwatemalczy nie nosza krotkich spodni ani sandalow ( nawet przy 40 stopniach).

Tu kobiety wciaz nosza folkowe stroje ( i teraz tak naprawde nie wiem czy ciagle je mozna nazwac folkowymi czy po prostu codziennymi) a gros dzentelmenow nosi kowbojskie kapelusze ( one to sie chyba rozprzetrzenily sie na cala Ameryke). Dla turysty intersujacy wydaje sie jedynie Parque Central i to wszystko, reszta to zwykly miejski sprawl, biedne suburbia, poskelcane domy bez kanalizacji; szerokie, brudne, brudne i jeszcze raz brudne ulice, zadnych parkow (moze i lepiej). Powiedzialbym, ze maja jeszcze przyzwoity targ, gdzie mozna kupic slodkie, dojrzale i smaczne mango, pomarancze, banany, papaje... ale chyba kazde miasto czy wioska Ameryki Srodkowej takowy ma.

Warto jednak zobaczyc okolice Xela´i ( tak sie zastanawiam czy ktos to jeszcze czyta, niewazne, strona numer siedemnascie) kilka wiosek i moze pokapac we Fuentes de Georginia.

Najbardziej zakakujac byla wioska Zunil, gdzie wierzenia Majow mieszaja sie z chrzescijanskimi (bardzo przypomina mi to San Juan de Chamula w Chiapas, Mx). Mieszkancy niewilelkiej wioski w gorach czcza San Simon i wydaje sie ze to on tu jest numerem jeden. Sam Simon ma swoj dom gdzie mieszka. Wlasciwie mieszka tu kukla, kukla ktora ma swoj salon, sypialnie i garderobe. Szamani codziennie sadzaja go na krzesle w jego salonie i ubieraja, nie moze zabraknac okularow przeciwslonecznych i kowbojskiego kapelusza. Wieczorem zas przebieraja go w pizamke i klada do lozka, tak poprostu. W ciagu dnia mieszkancy trzy razy dziennie skladaja mu ofiary z zywych zwierzat- kury albo golebia. Napierw odcinaja glowe biednemu ptakowi, krew wlewaja do jednego kielicha a reszta lezy na duzej plastikowej tacy, potem szaman zanosi to wszystko na dach i pali razem z ziolami.

Po tej dosc ekstrawaganckiej wizycie mozna sobie odpoczac w goracych zrodlach, osiem kilometrow od Zunil, gdzie woda dochodzi do 52 stopnii celcjusza, czyli taki rosolek. Jakby tego bylo malo one tez maja dosc niezwykle polozenie-caly czas wisi tam gesta mgla, ze widac tylko na odleglosc dwoch moze trzech metrow.... ach ta mistyka majow

So, from Ciudad Hidalgo I cross the massive steel bridge to Guatemala, what I found funny the gurad knew copule of words in polish. I cautch a tricicleta ( it's riksha style bike) to the bus terminal. Obviosuly there where no buses to Quatzeltenango ( now, stop and try to read and remeber it and than ask for direction) they told me that I can go there and catch a chicken bus ( Relahau) and change there for a bus to (...ltentango) and form there it is just 15 km to Xela ( which is the abbrevation of Quetz...).

CHICKEN BUS ( I don't really know why it is called chicken and not pork for instace)
I am sure you know, at least from the movies the yellow bus that takes kids in US to the school. So guatemalian imported many of them, pimp them up painting in rainbow colours adding some stars, animals, thunders... and now they are the only buses in Guate. Aparat from the driver there is also one guy - who is helping and selling tickets, packing animals, fruits, bikes and refrigerators on the roof.

So after 5 hrs I was in my hostel, happy to leave my passport and money in the savebox and just walk around. Xela is a bit westernized city, there are plenty of Spanish language school and many students, most of them are americans. All, almost all, americans have this amazing american-Spanish accents.

GRINGOS
I was always wondering if you can see, straightaway, all the whities turists. So yes. One glimps and I could count all the gringos on the square. And it is not only colour of the skin but also the cloths-Guatemalan don't wear shorts, flip-flops or sandals and shades.

Here ladies still wear beautiful, ethnic dresses and all the gents have hats ( the same as in Texas and probobly in entire America). For a turist there is not much to do in Xela, the historic center is just, literally, one block. Apart from that, there is a market that seems to be cool. You can get there fresh, juicy and sweet mangoes, papayas, bananas and drink my favourite licuados ( finally!)

Around Xela there are couple of nice villages where christian and western culture mixes with the Maya's tradition and believes. In Zunil they worship San Simon. He used to be Maya god and now he is a christian saint(!) San Simon has his own house with bedroom, walk-in wardrobe... He, a plastic toy, changes everyday, wears sunglasses and cowboy hat. In the evening shaman takes him to his bedroom and San Simon sleeps there. Villagers, apart from praying, also scarify animals ( pigeon or chicken), cutting the head and pouring the blood in the the goblet and than shaman burns everything on the roof. In spite of protest of priest they also take the doll for Easter celebration, dancing (!), eating and partying with it!

After this extravagant experience you can just enjoy hot spring in Fuentes de Georginia cover with mystic fog..wrau...mystic Maya world

Czy ogladaliscie Y tu mama tambien ? To wlasnie w jednej z Zatok Huatulco (Bahia Maguey) krecono sceny na plazy.
Szeroka, pusta, chcialoby sie rzec nawet dziewicza, a jakze, plaza Pacyfiku, bialy piasek, szumia fale, wysokie palmy, generalnie szmery bajery i bajka. Niestety Bahias de Huatulco dostaly sie w rece rzadu meksykanskiego i skutecznie gina. Zaplanowano tam kurort i basta. Bede wiec wysokie hotele, betonowe bulwary, sklepy i kina a takze smog, brud i trzysta tysiecy turystow miesiecznie i wysoki przychod. Dla najdalszych zatok jest jeszcze ratunek, droga jeszcze nie zostala doprowadzona, ciagle rozciaga sie tam park narodowy, a plaze sa relatywnie puste. Nie jest to jednak juz ten raj na Ziemii, do ktorego jechalem. Nie wiem, cholera mnie bierze jak widze ze na nizla plaze ktos prowadzi ohydne i ordynarne betonowe schody...A od tego juz krok zeby zamienic plaze w kolejne Cancun czy Acapulco.
Nie zrobilem nawet zadnych zdjec, bo czemu? Brudnej plazy oblepionej, inaczej tego nazwac nie mozna, bialymi krzeslami ogrodowymi? Wysypka ohydnych krzesel do tego charakterystyczne stoliki "z dziurka" ma parasol. jakby tego bylo maloto te obskurne baro-restauracje, skrzetnie skonstruowane z resztek blachy, folii, desek i sumiennie ozdobionych liscimi palmowymi. Sorry ale nasze miasteczka nadmorskie odpadaja w przedbiegach... Miasteczku? Szkoda gadac.
Czekalem tylko na to zeby wyjechac, wyjechac w strone Gwatemali. Najpierw 12 godzin autobusem a potem jeszcze 50 minut colectivo.
Colectivo to nieznana u nas forma transportu. Formalnie to taki busik, ktory laduje ile ludzi sie zmiesci, lamie wszelkie przepisy drogowe, gna jak antylopa przez serpentynu gorskie, i zatrzymuje sie na kazde najmniejsze zadanie pasazerow i ludzi czekajacyhc na poboczach. Jakby to powiedziala generacja strasza ode mnie : Jazda bez trzymanki. Tak dotarlem do granicy z Gwatemala w Ciudad Hidalgo.

Have you ever seen Y tu mama tambien ? Well, if not if I say a beach by the Pacific cost you know what I mean. I had a really high expectation from The Bahias de Huatulco. And once again I am disappointed. It used to be amazing place with beautiful white, neat, sandy beaches, bit remote and virgin but for the last 12 or 15 years the government took care of that, in the worst possible way of course. So soon we will have "a proper resort, well this place deserves
to be a resort, doesn't it?" I can't wait beautiful skyscrapers, nice concrete promenades or huge malls ( well in fact the first one is already there). The furthest bays may, eventually, still preserve its natural beauty but for most of them it is too late. Whatever. I am never getting back there.
Time over there I spent rescheduling my trip and awaiting the bus to the border with Guatemala. It took me entire night to get to Tapachula and then 50 more minutes in a colectivo to go to Ciudad Hidalgo on the border with Guate ( I love this abbreviation). Where the story continues.
I should explain what colectivo is I believe. Well it is a fast and dangerous way of transport, it works more less like bus, but has no schedule and stops, so you can hop on and off whenever you want. But the most important is that colectivo is fast and fast and breaks all the traffic rules.

I stalo sie. Nie wpuscili mnie na poklad! Frau, meda, szczerzuja, franca z niemieckich lini (?) lotniczych Conodr nie wpuscila mnie na poklad, ta fladra, orynarna bramaputra, samolotu z Frankfurtu do Panamy. Jak gdyby nigdy nic wziela moj bezcenny bilet i podarla na kawalki, mowiac: do Panamy obowiazuja bilety w dwie strony! (co jest nieprawda, trzeba miec jedynie bilet na dalsza podroz-np, autobusowy, ktory mialem!) Jak chcesz ( nie wiedzialem, ze jestesmy na ty!) to mozesz pobiec do sali C, masz jeszcze 15 minut moze zdazysz kupic bilet-mowi ta egzema. Moze.
Nie mialem czasu na zastanawianie, nogi za pas i rura. A za mna slysze kolejne osoby czlapia i sapia... Ow mysle sobie nie ja sam. Jako prowadzacy peleton dotralem do kolejnej fistuli z linii lotniczych i ona powiedziala, ta walpurgia, ta grymala, ze nie sprzedaje biletow, ale jej kolega (WTF) z biura podrozy obok, moze mi sprzedac ( smierdzialo mi to i smierdzi grubym przekretem)... Nie moglem placic karte, bo a jakze. Gdy wrocilem z bankomatu stalo 6 innych osob z podobym problemem a samolot juz stratowal.
Na szczescie(!) poznalem pare osob w tej samej sytaucji... Z pomoca Gosi ( niech Bog jej w dzieciach wynagrodzi), udalo mi sie kupic bilet na poranek dnia nastepnego do Mexico. Najtanszy bilet do Ameryki Centralej. Ehhh. Jeszcze kilka osob wybralo ten sam kierunek co ja... I spedzilismy mily wieczor na pustym lotnisku, przyspiajac na pasach bagazowych w oczekiwaniu na nasze plecaki.

Moral: nigdy nie kupuj biletow od linii czarterowych a przede wszytskim wystrzegaj sie CONDOR-a.

Do Ciudad de Mexico dolecialem po 40-godzinnej podrozy (sweet home Alabama). Wskoczylem do metra i dojechalem na TAPO, skad juz tylko 12 godzin do Huatulco. Po wielu godzinach podrozy wysiadlem w La Cruecita, o 10 rano, +32 i niebieskie niebo... CDN

So... I am not in Panama, this daughter of the bitch, pendeja, didn't let me enter on board. Why? She was claiming that I should have a return flight ticket ( according to panameñan law I don't -bus, ferry is enough!). But she was stubborn. She tore my ticket (my precious!) apart saying it is not valid anymore! (WTFF). She told me to run to the ticket hall C and buy the return ticket. Grrr. In my flip flops with the backpack and the sunglasses from Filipa I run as fast as I could... and I am telling u the airport in Frankfurt is not small, not at all. Once I get to the fucking Condor fucking ticket desk the other bitch said she cannot sell any tickets but her friend from the travel agency yes. (WTF no.2) Ok, I said ok, return from Panama... it was obviously more expensive than the one I had, I said whatever I just wanna go... and what? I couldn't pay with my card! So once again I run to the cash machine. When I got back the plane was already taking off... and by the counter there where 7 other disappointed ppl.
In couple of hrs I bought the cheapest ticket to Central America - Mexico... thanks to Gosia, Skyscanner and the very patient guy form other travel agency. I convinced guys to change destination from Panama to the cheapest ticket - Mexico ( as all backpackers count money).

Reflexion: Never fly with any charter airlines, especially with fucking Condor!

To Ciudad de Mexico I arrived after 40hrs journey, I just jumped into bus to Huatulco.
When I woke up in the morning I was already by the Pacific, it was bloody hot and humid. But...TBC

Panama w 1670 roku (...) była dużym, uroczym miastem, bogatym i silnym, słusznie nazywanym Złotą Czarą. Nie było takiego miejsca w całym Nowym Świecie, które mogłoby się z wówczas z nią równać urodą i bogactwem (...) na brzegu stała niewielka indiańska wioska o nazwie Panama. W miejscowym języku oznaczało to dobre miejsce do połowu ryb. Gdy hiszpańscy żołnierze przy tchnęli pochodnie od strzech i wybudowali w miejsce wioski miasto, zachowali starą nazwę Panama, która się utrwaliła. Nazwa ta znalazła uzasadnienie , gdyż wkrótce na wszystkie cztery strony świata zarzucano stąd hiszpańskie sieci. (...)Wszystkie starożytne bezcenne rzemiosła dotarły ostatecznie do Panamy, a tam trafiły do tygli, które przyjęły te lśniące smakołyki, zamieniając je na ciężkie sztaby złota. Magazyny zapełniły się złotymi polanami, w oczekiwaniu na służącą do przewozu skarbów flotę, która zawiezie je do Hiszpanii. Zdarzało się, że srebra ułożone warstwami spoczywały na ulicach z powodu braku miejsca w magazynach, dzięki swej wadze były jednak bezpieczne.
A tymczasem miasto rozwijało się. Bogactwa ujarzmionych narodów wykorzystano, aby wybudować tysiące pięknych domów z czerwonymi dachami, z których każdy miał wewnętrzne patio, gdzie rosły rzadkie tajemnicze kwiaty. Wszystkie sztuki i luksusy starej Europy przybywały na zachód, by za garść złota dodać urody panamskim domom.

John Steinbeck, Złota Czara, tłum. Irena Chodorowska

Już jutro wyruszam w długą i z założenia fascynującą podróż, przez Panamę, Kostarykę, Nikaragua'ę, Honduras, Gwatemalę i Belize do Meksyku. Postaram się pisać o tym co widziałem, przeżyłem, co widziałem. Zaczynam, jak do tej pory, najdłuższą i najbardziej egzotyczną wyprawę w moim życiu.
Jednym z których mnie "namówił" do rozpoczęcia właśnie w Panamie jest mój ulubiony pisarz John Steinebeck. Jak dziś wygląda to miasto? Jak się żyje w tej części świata? Czy to naprawdę jest trzeci świat? Jak zachowały się kultury rdzenne? Postaram się odpowiedzieć na te i inne pytania.
Tym razem będę pisał po polsku i po angielsku, nie będą to jednak ścisłe tłumaczenia:)
Zaczynam długim lotem z Wrocławia przez Dominikanę do Panamy!

PANAMA was a great, lovely city in 1670 (...) a rich, strong city, and justly called the Cup of Gold. No place in all the raw New World could compare with it in beauty and in wealth.(...)on the shore, huddled a small grass village of the Indians, and its name was Panama. In the native tongue this signified a place of good fishing. When the soldiers of Spain put torch to the litter of huts, and in its place built a new town, they kept the old name, Panama, which is a song. And soon the meaning justified itself, for out of this little town the nets of Spain were flung to the four directions.
All the long workings, the craftsmanship in precious things, came at last to Panama, where the melting pots received them like glowing gourmands and transformed them to thick golden logs. The warehouses were piled high with the sticks of gold, waiting for the treasure fleet to sail for Spain. At times there were bars of silver tiered up in the streets for lack of warehouse room, but they were safe from thievery in their weight.
Meanwhile the city grew to be a glorious thing. The wealth of enslaved nations was put to building thousands of fine houses with red roofs and little inset patios where rare secret flowers grew. All the colored arts and comforts of old Europe flew westward to beautify the Panamanian houses at the call of golden lumps.

Tomorrow I start very long and exciting journey. My big plan is to go from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, but I have to do it in 2-3 parts. This time I will cross Central America starting form Panama and finishing in Mexico.
I remember reading John Steinbeck's book Cup of Gold dreaming about going to Panama. Now my dream comes true.
I want to learn about Central America. How is it now? What is the influence of USA on the countries? How is life in the happiest countries in the Globe? How is there? Rediscover discovered.
I start tomorrow flying from Poland through Frankfurt and Dominicana to Panama City!

For me it was an important trip. I haven't been to many places for such a long time. Now, lukewarm, I can see more and different issues.

We went to Łódź, Warszawa (Warsaw), Kraków (Cracow) and in the Tatra Mountains to Zakopane.

Thanks to my friends I realized that Poland is about history, about II World War and communism. It is present in every city, in the town houses, squares, monuments, but what's more important in people memories and longings. History of Poland is not only history of Poles. Jews used to create our culture, cites ( Łódź!), cuisine, tradition.

Well, the trip was also about food. About meat: lard, shashlyk, sausages, blood pudding, bacon...

I like Warsaw a bit more, though I will never become a fun of the Centre (this would never and shouldn't be a polish Manhattan or whatever, we are not US or Shanghai). I always loved Nowe Miasto. After years of struggle Nowy Świat and Krakowskie Przedmieście look like a main street in European capital with unique slavish atmosphere. My place in the city was and will be Praga, disconnected and out of the way, authentic, if you listen carefully you can here bands playing Grzesiuk.

I never liked Kraków. It was so bohemian, so avant-garde, so Galician (as we say ironically in polish) and cliché...I had my favourite place- Kazimierz, which I still love...but unfortunately it gets more and more commercial, touristic the spirit starts disappearing... I fell in love into Bazylika Mariacka and it's deep ultramarine ceiling with golden stars and Wit Stwosz altar (as powerful as The Garden of Earthly Delights). The interior is a masterpiece of craft. You can feel slavish spirit in every single detail, in the colours used, in the amount of light penetrating the interior through the stained glass, in the textures used.

My London

My romance with London is officially over. I left the city in the sunny morning. I have never been that busy in my life - working, making friends, exploring the city, leaving and coming back, cycling, running, partying. I reckon there is no time to stand and stare there, time passes three times faster there.

It is difficult to summarise almost one and a half years. I will not even try.

London /ˈlʌndən/ is a city by the Thames river, where weather sometimes sucks, full of foreigners ( sometimes you have a feeling that there are no British there and you are the only white guy around) with vibrant night scene. This is the place where urban fashion and trends (cloths, bikes, activities) begins, where the biggest marathon takes place, so you can see thousands ppl preparing running around the city all day and night long-running to the office and redressing, running along the river, in the park, along the Regent's Canal. Home to the top class museums, including my favourite tandem Tate Modern ( for exhibitions and for Herzog and Meuron design) and Tate Britain (for Late at Tate every first Friday of the month). City built by several smaller towns with my favourites Greenwich ( with King's Edward Collage where on Sunday afternoon you can listen classical music students rehearsing and just relax lying on the grass) and Shoreditch (where you eat bagels at three in the morning getting back from an outstanding secret loft party).

Sometimes accused of being temporary place and kindergarten-city, where bars are closed at 11 PM and you can't find restaurant's kitchen open after 9PM, and the last screening in the cinema starts at 8 PM.

City of parks and squares with my favourites Greenwich and Hampstead Heath where you can admire the skyline of the city, with planes and helicopters all the time in the skies. Place where every piece of land has it own, very often ridiculous, name: Gherkin Alley, Gough Close, George Walk.

Home town to Banksy(:P), Samuel Peppys and The Queen.

It used to be my home.

For tourist and non-Londoners it is a dream city.

Whenever you think of visiting Spain the first thing that comes to your mind is Andalucìa.

I wanted to take a small detour and visit some of my friends living in the north of España- Kingdom of Navarra and Euskadi (El País Vasco). It is an ideal place for hiking ( if you wish you can take Camino de Santiago) and for wine tasting regional grafts like viura, malvasia and learing surfing in chilly and terrific Atlantic Ocean...It is said that Spain starts from Zaragoza, I doubt.

I just wanna say one thing about San Sebastian ( Donosti in Basque). It was a bad joke visiting it in the rain, though it was still impressive. I wonder how perfect it must be during the summer time or film festival...

Olite is a small, quiet, and charming town half an hour form Zaragoza. It has everything you need for resting form bustle and clamor of the city, there is a nice castle, a main square, few restaurants and pubs, and what's the most important bodegas and vineyards with local wine grafts. I had there the best lunch during my trip, in a place called La Muralla, some borrajas and a good fish. If you ever stop there visit the Wine Museum and than go to Piedmonte and Ochoa wine shop.

Pamplona (Iruña) without bull racing is a tranquil city somewhere in north Spain. It has ( at least for me) two great things. The first is a cheap and good wine ( I have a feeling I am slowly becoming an alcoholic or in a sommelier). The second is the night life, the people sitting on the squares having pinxos/tapas and drinking wine; teenagers, students and grandmas:)
If you ever visit the city don't miss hanging out in Ciudadela Park ( there is a similar one in Poznan, Poland called Cytadela ...) green vast of land wrapped by the 500 years old wall...
...and the Camino de Santiago goes through the city you can see, mostly, strange looking people with backpack and hiking sticks and... the shell But you'd better visit the city during San Fermin, the biggest party in Europe:)

It's such a shame that Expo ground is abandoned now, thousand of square meters of descent architecture and millions of euros wasted and Zaha's bridge that is closed ( there is a bloody fence around, so to cross the river you have to take the next one). Expo ground might have been very nice, modernistic office development, with great parkand an access to the river, but it is a ghost city pretty like the Olympic Village in Athens.

In polish language there is a proverb A life like in Madrid ( which rhymes)- the life of Riley.

The city never sleeps, or maybe it does, but for sure not in the nigh time. Well mid-day siesta is for sleeping, night is for meeting, drinking, partying, enjoying life. I clearly remember when I was studying in Germany a Spanish friend of mine asked me why streets are here so empty. Well, it was winter so I thought it is just too cold, windy, rainy. But just only now I realized what she meant. The calles and avenidas are packed, from the dusk ( with perfectly dressed up grandmas buying a loaf of fresh bread or fish) to siesta and after siesta till the sun rise, bars and cafeterias are always full.

Reina Sofia, Thyssen-Bornemisza, Prado are overwhelming, three top-end museums, almost next door. Frankly you can spend at least one day in each of them.

I discovered pinturas negras by Goya in Museo del Prado. Dark, oppressive, frightening, ugly intense, haunting works...for sure not Goya style. Honestly they remind me more of Francis Bacon than any other Goya's contemporary painter. He executed this works in his seventies!

The Garden of Earthly Delights was my next goal. I learned about this masterpiece from the movie by Lech Majewski (which I sincerely recommend). The triptych is delirious, frenzy and powerful.

Reina Sofia is just stunning, both the collection and the building. My beloved Calder and his mobiles, Picasso's Guernica and the extension of the museum with amazing maze of terraces and rooftops cover by purple semi-open canopy which creates a very unique atmosphere. Nouvel created this cosy and spacious terrace using the simplest elements and tools. Chapeau bas!

Everyone had been to Paris, but me.

I am not sure if there is a need to write about IT. For me it was a big disappointment.

You know this feeling when you go to the cinema and after seeing a movie you realize that everything was already in the trailer (Benjamin Button type). Nihil novil. In my case the same happened with Paris. I know how Eiffel Tower looks like ( though I thought it will be a bit taller) or Louvre and La Villette, Garniers Opera. I know the history, the Hausmann crap, who built what and when ... and I had to drew and knew everything at Uni...

All I wrote down in my notebook where negative (!) feelings , but the Jardin du Luxembourg and Brut.

Jardin du Luxemburg is a fairytale in the middle of the congested and vibrant city, an oasis of peace. The beautifully regular and geometrical french garden from 17th century with cute the pond for toy boats. Frederic Sofia Luxembourg Chairs are really comfy and look modern, so I couldn't believe that they were designed in 1923! (I was wondering how many Parisians have this chair in their gardens:)

Brut is just a sparking wine that contains no more than 1.5% sugar.

And one more thing... People ( and i.e Justice , the band) where talking about the problem with the immigrants in France especially in exurbias of Paris, Frankly I thought French people like whining... I was shocked. London is as inhomogeneous as Paris, but I don't fear walking through Whitechapel or deep South London. Anyone can explain my the difference? Stereotyping I would say that Indians or Pakistani have different background - culture, religion and attitude, they are not dangerous and Algerian or Moroccan ( Arabic?) are. But I think that's a proper bullshit and unfair prejudice.

(BTW I should thank one Asian - originally from Cambodia (?)- looking French guys so I didn't finish swimming in Seine )

Definitely I am getting back there, giving the city of love ( or whatever) a second and a third chance- I can't believe that entire world loves it but me.

GENERAL PREFACE

I am fed up with taking pictures, it is not enough. I wanted to tell the stories behind them. Where was the picture taken? Why? How was there? Is it worth visiting? The supremacy of mass-media pop culture where news, stories, tragedies are told by picture is appalling. Paradoxically everything in here is a paean to the Image Culture.

I am starting my little rebellion on the trip to Sicily saying BASTA. No doubt it will be tough but I need to try.

Herewith I promise to work hard on my Polish and English, to make the lecture a pleasure not a struggle.

PREFACE

My short adventure on Sicily had started as usual I just bought the cheapest ticket for a flight to a sunny destination in Europe. Michał called this the monthly sunshine dose which perfectly suits my attitude to this weekend brakes. After being asked where Sicily is, yes not everyone knows that ( and I am not so sure if everyone must know; Can you point, without hesitation, where Philippines are?) I decided to publish a map each and every time, to make sure everyone knows where were the pictures taken.

This was my second "trip" to Italy this year, and happily I am once again positively surprised. The weather, as for winter, was just marvellous, sunny, blue skies, +16... I felt like in a summer time in London (!).

During this 3 days I visited Trapani, Palermo, Catania and Syracuse.

PALERMO

Don't go to Cuba, it is not worth visiting La Habana... Trust me. Palermo in it's spatial structure looks like Havana. The same, tall, narrow and cosy streets with fresh laundry hanging from balconies and loggias, the same neglected, falling apart splendid houses, kids running around, palm trees, cobblestone streets ( well If I analyse a bit longer I observe remarkable similarities between Palermo, La Habana and Odessa)

It is such a shame, that the city is turned back from the Tyrrenhian Sea and you cannot go for mid-afternoon walk.

CATANIA

I went there because Giancarmelo told me:There is the Santa Agata festival,you must go there, this will be amazing experience.( and for the record my flatmate is Italian and Catanian). I was a bit sceptical - going to unknown city, not knowing anyone, for one day just to see religious festival and procession. ( not seeing actual city) There were fireworks at the very beginning, the procession started at Piazza del Duomo and lasted all night until midday...Men and some women in white gowns ( it used to be reserved for men only, but...) were pulling the rope attached to the altar with relic of Santa Agata or carrying monstrous 2-meters tall, massive, wax candles; there were stands with fried nuts with caramel and honey, sweets and all you would expect to buy during church fair. The city was paaaaacked. You couldn't possibly walk, I felt the tension, the excitement...

Streets in Catania are made of black volcanic stones and oriented in a very particular way, the one going from north to south are finished with Etna or Sea view respectively. The volcano and the Sea used to determine the life of the people. In heathen times everyone was afraid of Volcano's rage, so on the main square they raised the statue of elephant made of volcanic rocks, which was supposed to calm it down.

SYRACUSE

I don't even know how to start. Imagine that in the middle of crappy, grey, sad winter you arrive to the splendid square, the sky is just blue, sun is shining and the shadows are strong once again, in the way you can easily read the line between shaded and exposed area, marble floor, white facades, window's shutters ...you can hear this kind of city rumour that I love, sound of people talking, chatting, laughing, kids screaming ( in other words no cars, planes, helicopters, honks).

On the Piazza del Duomo there are two churches. Each one is more intriguing. When I entered the first one I though it is one of the late baroque churches with rich decoration and hideous interior.I couldn't be more wrong.

The beautiful blending of architectural styles is evident in the internal aspects of the Cathedral. The Doric columns date from the days when a Temple of Athena stood on the site, but in the Seventh Century, when the first Christian church was built there, the columns were incorporated into its structure, linking the worship of the past, with the present. Your hear starts beating faster.

On the other side of the piazza I enter to very modest 17th century church of Santa Lucia, which will be probably one of the Italian churches if there was not Caravaggio painting: Seppellimento di santa Lucia.You can just simply enter and have your time with the masterpiece and no one is going to disturb you. I had a feeling that is kind of intimacy with art is rare.

Unfortunately the ruins of Greek Syracuse were closed during the winter time.... And that is a very good reason to come back.
